Sporting Life - How Do I Throw A Ball Better

By Joseph Archibald
Sep 24, 2009
A professional baseball player and a high school baseball player will rarely have the same skill, or strength, yet they will always be playing in the same baseball field dimensions. They will be running the ninety feet from base to base, and throwing the ball from sixty feet at the pitcher's mound.

Though it is incomprehensible that all players, even high school students, are expected to do a perfect throw, it is still bearable since all baseball fields have the same size and length. This just simply means that because of its dimension, it is expected that minor high school games and major baseball league are to perform the same skills while playing baseball.

Another thing is that the measurements of the field where these kids play and that of the field where major league baseball players hold their games are just the same. Both fields measure ninety feet between the bases and sixty feet between the home and the pitcher's mound.

It is great to know that throwing with appropriate speed and accuracy can be developed. With the right amount of training and conditioning for the development of appropriate arm speed and accuracy, the expected skill can be acquired.

Practicing for perfection

When it is about throwing with speed and accuracy, there are three kinds of this that should be practiced properly. Moreover, each throw has a certain prescribed action and posture to follow. By following this properly, a successful throw will surely be done.

1. Direction - As long as the kids know where the home plate is and know how to stand on it properly, and as long as they know how to position themselves in hitting, throwing would be fairly easy to teach. Make a complete turn of the body, face the shoulders to the target, and stand on parallel-positioned feet. This will help them give an accurate throw at maximum speed. The correct starting position would be a ninety degree turn of the foot to the side of the throwing arm.

The second kind is called direction 2. With this, the thrower should position directly to the target. If not, the hips of the thrower might not be able to do the perfect turn which can later result to inappropriate throw. Lastly, follow through is another throwing technique that one needs to practice. With this, some of the stress in throwing is transferred to the shoulder for a better aim.

3. Follow through - The arm should have a complete turn so the shoulder will not be totally stressed from the action. This will also stop the players from aiming the ball. Most players who do a complete path for the arm are those who finish their throws at the opposite side hip, knee or thigh accompanied with a raised rear leg as they throw. This method will facilitate weight transfer which will result to putting all the power into the throw.

Moreover, the throwing styles mentioned will not really be done correctly without enough practice. All those styles need to be learned before it can be perfected. In the end, a player should always remember that the difference in success and failure lies in the performance of the players. Even little mistakes can already bring the team to its defeat. With this, practice is really needed.
