How to Win an Online Poker Tournament

By Stuart Grayson

There is nothing more exciting than winning an online poker tournament. Hundreds if not thousands enter but only one can win. To do so requires a lot of patience, discipline and focus with a little bit of luck sprinkled in. Do you have what it takes to do so?

First of all you need to choose the poker room you are most comfortable with. Each poker room has its own style and thus the poker tournaments are slightly different. Do you prefer one with loose players or tight players? What kind of stakes do you like to play for? Answer these questions and it will help choose the room you will play in.

When the online poker tournament begins you will find that it is alive with activity. Players are desperate to make their mark early while the blinds are still small. So you will find that many players are going to play poker in a style which is quite aggressive. Don't let them throw you off your game. Maintain your focus.

Another point to having success at the poker tournament is to note the habits of your opponents. Do they have any particular betting habits? After a while you will notice that they play the same way in certain situations. If you can, maybe you should take notes during the course of the tournament.

You are going to want to protect your chips but you also want to see your stack grow. This means if you have a value hand such as a pocket pair or an Ace then don't slowplay it. Raise the stakes forcing anyone else at the table to pay for having to stay in the hand. The worst thing you can do is to give them a free card which turns out to be a card that helps them a lot and hurts you greatly.

Texas Holdem is a game where things can change very quickly. With that in mind you can receive nothing for half an hour and then you will get pocket Aces three hands in a row. This is important why you stay patient. The last thing you want to do is to lose the plot and throw in all your chips on a bad play and be eliminated chasing a draw which doesn't come.

As the poker tournament progresses and people start to be eliminated you will find that the pace slows down and the online poker being played tightens up. At this stage if you haven't been growing your chip stack you will see that the blinds are going to start eating into your chip stacks. If the blinds are now 500/1000 and you only have 3,000 in chips than there is even more pressure on you to do something and act before you are blinded out.

If you want to win an online poker tournament you need to remain positive, focused and disciplined. It takes hundreds of hands to win but only one poorly played hand to lose and be eliminated.
