All-In-One Printers: Possibly The Perfect Small Office Tool
With all-in-one printers, you have the perfect setup. Think about it. Not only can you print, but you can scan documents and photos, send and receive faxes, and make copies. It seems like the perfect tool. Yes, they're a little larger and heavier than those printers that only do one thing, but just look at all they can do.
The Scanner
Everyone needs a scanner. Personally, I hate paper clutter. I can scan the documents I need, store them in a file, and toss the paper into the trash. It's beautiful.
Yes, all-in-one printers provide you with a only decent scanner. If you want bells and whistles, you'll probably want to invest in a stand-alone device. To me, however, this defeats the purpose of having a neat office. I want as few devices as possible, therefore an all-in-one printer suits me just fine.
The Fax Machine
It appears that fax machines might be going the way of the T-Rex in the not too distant future. With scanners and emails seemingly everywhere, they're definitely becoming obsolete. Still, there are those times when nothing else will do the job like a fax machine.
For instance, when I have a issue with my bank, I feel more comfortable receiving information via fax than I do with an email. Maybe it's just my own paranoia, but a fax just "feels" safer for important information.
It's important to know the speed of the modem of the fax built into the printer. If it's less than, say, 33.6 Kbps, I'd forget it. At 33.6Kbps, this means a fax would be received in about 3 seconds.
The Copier
I honestly couldn't survive without my copier. I seriously use it every day. I only copy documents, however, so if you're using your copier to make color copies, there are some things you need to consider.
Firstly, if you're making color copies, a laser all-in-one probably won't work for you, unless you want to fork out a much larger chunk of cash. Honestly, when I have done color copies on my all-in-one inkjet, they turned out fine.
Other stuff
Most all-in-one printers these days have automatic document feeders. These allow you to feed a stack of paper in the printer all at one time, and not have to worry about putting more in for a while. On average, about 30 to 50 sheets would be what you should look for.
Duplexing is another feature to keep in mind. Duplexing allows the printer to print on both sides of the paper all at once. For certain types of printing, duplexing is a must. Stuff like brochures and newsletters, for example, or just when you want to save paper.
