OSHA Provides Safety Videos In The Workplace To All Businesses

What is OSHA? The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is a federal agency that was created in 1970. From its inception, the agency has been misunderstood by many businesses, large and small because of its regulatory mission of monitoring safety in the workplace. Some companies feel that the agency is a threat but it is quite the opposite. OSHA developed specific workplace standards and policies to make sure all employees were trained and educated regarding safety in the workplace and to protect the employees health.

OSHA provides many resources designed for the small business owner and encourages businesses to establish safety and health programs to fix hazards, prevent injuries and prevent illnesses in the workplace. Today, OSHA provides a number of safety videos to employers to provide safety training and education to their staff.

Falls are the number one leading cause of injury in the workplace. Believe it or not, a major cause of falls is through the use of improper lifting techniques. Untrained employees may not know proper lifting tips such as:

-Assess the situation and plan how to execute the lift.

-Make sure you wear non-skid shoes for firm footing.

-Bend the knees, tighten the stomach and keep the back straight.

-Keep a good grip on the item or person you're lifting.

-Lift smoothly without twisting the body or the feet.

-Push an item instead of pulling.

Another leading cause of injury is panic. The trained and educated employee knows that in an emergency situation, it is important to remain calm, especially if there is a fire. Many businesses are encouraged to have fire drills from time to time to review safety precautions in evacuating a building in a calm manner. A good workplace fire drill will combine the following tips:

-Get everyone safely out of a burning and smoking building.

-Review where to meet when everyone is out of the building.

-Know how to properly use a fire extinguisher. A trained safety expert should teach employees how to use a fire extinguisher.

There are businesses that see OSHA as a threat and in some cases, rightly so. Non-compliant businesses to OSHA health and safety standards and regulations will be fined, penalized, even shut down until all violations are brought up to code. The bottom line is, OSHA is an advocate and an ally of employees and businesses.
