St. Louis Cardinals Playoff Tickets - Possible Playoff Matchups

By Brent Warnken
Sep 24, 2009
St. Louis is looking good right now, and if all goes according to plan the Cardinals ought to make it into the playoffs easily. They enjoy a healthy lead in the NL Central and are swinging hard, pitching nasty and playing defense like a title contender, but what will happen to the Cardinals once they make it into the playoffs? Will they play some of their bitter rivals? Is there a team that the Cards would rather match up against? Let's take a look into the near future to see what the potential playoff opponents for the Cardinals could look like. Once the games start, get your St. Louis Cardinals playoff tickets online, where you can get a seat at the game even if it's all sold out.

Division Series - The St. Louis Cardinals are right on the brink of getting a No. 1 seed in the playoffs. As of September 12, 2009, they're nipping at the heels of the Los Angeles Dodgers, the current NL leaders, and they might just catch them. But they haven't yet. If the season were to end today, the Cards would be the No. 2 seed and they'd play the Philadelphia Phillies, the No. 4 seed, in the postseason's division series. This ought to be a fun series - lots of slugging, lots of power, lots of hits. However, the Phillies haven't exactly been a piece of cake for the Cardianls this year. No, sir. In fact, the Cardinals lost four out of the five games that they played against the Phillies in 2009, and the run differential was a staggering 24-40.

Championship Series - The most likely championship series opponents for the Cardinals are the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Colorado Rockies, assuming the Rockies win the wild card race over the San Francisco Giants. Los Angeles would make for a tough opponent on paper, but during the regular season the Cardinals bested the Dodgers in their season series five games to two with a 31-19 run differential. But while the Los Angeles Dodgers look like a good draw, the Rockies certainly don't. The Cardinals were swept in the season series by the Rockies, losing all four of their meetings with Colorado and posting only nine total runs to Colorado's 33.

World Series - Who would Cardinals fans most like to see their team play in a potential World Series matchup? The most likely teams to enter the World Series from the American League at this point are the New York Yankees, Los Angeles Angels, Boston Red Sox and Detroit Tigers. The Cardinals did not play the New York Yankees, the Boston red Sox or the Los Angeles Angels this season, but they did, however, play the Detroit Tigers, beating them in a three-game series two games to one.

So there you have it, the most likely playoff scenarios for the St. Louis Cardinals. You can see how this all plays out in real life if you get tickets to see their home playoff games. The playoffs ought to be exciting no matter who the Cardinals draw in the postseason, so make sure you enjoy every moment of it.
