Training Doesn't Have To Be Boring Anymore
To keep up with changes in the economy (especially in the downturn we are currently experiencing) and with advances in technology, conditions in the workplace are constantly changing. Sometimes that also means that employees are frequently coming and going.
What all that means is simply that employers need to be sure they have a stable and efficient method for training employees and an ongoing plan to keep all workers updated and knowledgeable on workplace policies and procedures.
First of all, determine whether or not you need to bring in outside talent or you should utilize the gifts of your current employees. Training and team-building exercises can often be enjoyable and engaging when it is done off-site by a company with expertise.
But on the other hand, it can sometimes be more cost-effective and create a more positive work environment to allow individual workers to use their skills to train and bring the team together.
You will see leaders emerge from these kinds of opportunities, which is what most employers like to see in the long run, right?
Look for resources in the community that will highlight the things that your workers need to learn. For example, I live close to two major universities, and they provide seminars on a variety of topics at little or no cost to the general public.
You may look for discounted group rates and o as a team. Have your staff take notes and review the important parts in a meeting later.
There is no reason why you can't make training a grand ol' time. Get creative and invent new ways to communicate with employees instead of just explaining or telling them what to do. Sure, it might seem goofy at first to have a mock radio show or something along those lines, but it will definitely give relief from the everyday humdrum.
You will, of course, want to make sure that you keep track of who has been trained on, to, or with new systems, procedures, and policies. Fortunately, there is training tracking software out there that makes it easy to not only supplement training but to monitor your employees in terms of who has been trained (and who hasn't) as well as supervise their progress individually.
Implementing job shadowing and employee mentoring helps employees form strong bonds of trust in the workplace; it also helps employees to focus and learn about the various aspects of the company besides just their own niche.
Training does not have to be boring, overwhelming, or frustrating. Be creative and use it as an opportunity to improve--yourself, your company, and your employees. Plus, if you allow it to double as team-building, you save time and resources!
