Essentials In Designing Your Dream Home

By Art Gib

We all dream of the home we want to someday build and live in. For those who truly pursue it, these dreams can become a reality. There is a lot more to designing your dream home than just a listing a few features like the white picket fence or large fireplace mantel. These are things that are important to add on, after the other major things have been covered.

First, how much space do you want and need. Space is important in many ways because if not taken into considerations early on, you may have to eliminate other things you want when it is too late to make changes. For example, if you eventually want a grand piano, you obviously need to have the room for it. What size bedroom and walk in closet do you want? How open do you want your kitchen and living room? What about vaulted ceilings?

Lighting is also important. The size and number of windows, the direction the house faces, as well as other light fixtures around the house can make a huge impact to the feel of the home. Do you want a home full of light, or do you like the darkness?

Functionality is the most important consideration for the design of every room in the house. If you are going to do work in the garage, does the layout make sense to you, or will you be required to back out your car for every project? I have seen many homes where the laundry room is it down behind the kitchen and nowhere near the bedrooms. This just makes no sense. If you will have a home office that clients will visit, you do not want to have the office down in the dungeons of the basement, rather near the front door, or with a separate door to the outside all together.

This is your dream home, right? What will make you the most comfortable and give you the most enjoyment? Whether you install your own recreation features like a tennis court or swimming pool, or your home is backed up to a mountain trail, you must ensure that your needs are met.

Finally, but certainly not the least important are a few more areas to consider. Does your new home design include all the storage you desire and will desire in the future? What about the future, if your family grows and needs change, will this home be scalable to those needs? What about guest quarters? Do you want to be able to entertain in style?
