Charms Bracelets: Symbolism in Accessories
Charm bracelets are worn around the wrist and there are also charm anklets, charm necklaces and charm rings. Personal charms are carried on these items and they can be either decorative adornments or hold significance for the important things in the owners' life.
Possible beginnings of the idea behind the charm could include, the warding off of evil spirits or bad luck. The wearing of charms can be dated back to ancient Egypt where charms were used for symbols of faith and luck as well as for identification. For the purposes of identification, these charms also extended to the individual afterlife gods and were for recognizing by the followers. As a protection in battle, medieval knights wore charms and these charms were also worn in the Dark Ages to represent the origins of the family, as well as political and religious convictions.
There have been several waves of trends in charm bracelets. England's Queen Victoria wore them and that started the fashion among the noble classes in Europe. Soldiers that were returning home from war would bring home trinkets, that were made by local crafts men as gifts to loved ones. In the 1950's and the early 1960's American teenagers would collect charms to record the events in their lives. Through the latter part of the twentieth century, production and interested waned, but charms and charm bracelets had a resurgence in popularity after 2000 when collectors began to eagerly seek vintage charms. Because of the fame and notoriety of the film 'Pirates of the Caribbean', the trend in charms started leaning towards such themes as swords, skulls and crosses.
Modular bracelets are of European design and since 2002 have enjoyed popularity in Europe and America. The charms are typically made from silver, gold or glass and are easily interchangeable. The wearer can create the look he or she desires. Due to the wide range of beads and baubles available, charms appeal to a very diverse customer base. Silver beads can start at about 30 dollars (15 pounds) and can range up to $600 or even 800 dollars (300 pounds - 400 pounds). The beads can be worn as bracelets, anklets, necklaces, earrings and rings if you want a matching set.
