A Discussion On Children With Autism

A few areas covered in this article are what autism is, what causes it, and what can be done to help children with autism in Florida. Autism is a disorder of the central nervous system that causes challenges in three areas, social interaction, communication, and a narrowing of focus causing repetitive behavior. Other symptoms commonly exist as well such as the inability to form relationships, and interact with the environment around them. Typically signs for this condition begin surfacing between twelve and eighteen months of age. Delay of language in the preschool years is usually a symptom of more severe autism, while those with a lesser degree of autism show signs of misbehavior around age four or five. Those individuals who are affected with a more mild form of autism are sometimes able to live independent lives. About point one percent of children born are affected with autism.

Many studies have been done in attempt to determine the cause of autism. There are hints at things that may correlate, but nothing that stands out as the single cause. Some researchers suggest that a combination of genes, that when combined, encourage the development of autism. In families who have a child with autism, the chance of them having another child with autism is between three and eight percent. In many cases, autism is linked to another underlying medical condition such as severe infections or genetic disorders.

The condition of autism is not such that a simple medical test can be done to confirm or rule out its presence. Autism, rather, is diagnosed by observing behavior and social interactions. Many doctors suggest having a second opinion when making their assessment. Before treatment begins the doctors need to rule out other conditions that may show similar symptoms.

There is also not a specific treatment that is prescribed to autism patients. A doctor usually has a specialist that they can refer them to. It has been suggested to meet with several specialists in order to find the one that you feel best about and are comfortable with. Each specialist will come with a varying degree of credentials, and combining those with the knowledge that the parent has about the child, a decision can be made for the child's benefit. Typically different methods of education and behavior management will have a beneficial impact upon the child. Understand that some methods are backed by medical studies while others are not.
