Tips for Checking for Bed Bugs
There's no doubt bed bug infestation is still on the rise from coast to coast and in between. That means the Chicago metropolitan area and every surrounding community is affected by possible infestation. If bed bugs make it into your home, it does not mean you're a bad housekeeper, it means the critters have somehow hitched a ride to your home through your travels or visits to public places such as hotels, airplanes, and public transportation.
Bed bugs can hide in crevices in bags and luggage, on clothes or in the folds of clothes. The problem has plagued people in every walk of life whether you live in a high rise or in a tenement. We live in a transient society and with air travel more accessible to all corners of the world, who knows where they came from? Therefore, it is important for consumers to be aware of the bed bug infestation problem and immediately check luggage upon return from a trip and stay at a hotel or motel.
When you travel, always inspect the premises for signs. Here are a few tips from your Chicago pest control professional:
-Peel back the sheets and check the mattress by running your fingers along the upper and lower seams. Make sure the mattress tag is clear because bed buds often hide there.
-Examine the headboard and if possible remove it to check accessible crevices where they like to hide. Check for tiny black spots, a sign of excrement--smaller than poppy seeds. Look for translucent light brown skins, or in case of infestation, live bugs.
-Check the bedside table and inside drawers along the walls and in corners. Pull out the drawers and look for places a cleaning person might miss.
-Keep suitcases elevated off the floor on a luggage stand. If you have a soft case, definitely keep it elevated.
-When you pack to leave, inspect your luggage carefully and each item as you pack. It is a good idea to take re-sealable plastic bags to store clothes.
-If you find bed bugs or signs of them, report the problem immediately to the hotel and move to a new room--start the inspection process over again.
