Tiny Tastes of Thailand in Bangkok Airport Hotels

By Gregory Smyth

As with most major cities, the airport is located quite a distance away from the center of town - both for safety and noise levels. However, this can make it a little difficult for stopover travelers who just want to eat something that doesn't taste like plastic, and breathe some air that hasn't been canned!

The Suvarnabhumi airport district has quite a few hidden gems when it comes to finding places to restore and refresh yourself. Quite a few of these options can be found not among the Bangkok airport facilities themselves, but in the exclusive collection of Bangkok airport hotels just outside Suvarnabhumi's gates. We look at where to find the antidotes to airplane food around Suvarnabhumi.

Novotel Suvarnabhumi airport hotel is a favorite not only of stopover travelers, but high profile personalities like the Queen of Sweden, the PM of Nepal, Benny Golson, the jazz legend, and the UN Secretary General ... they are certainly doing something right!

The world's most important people have been enjoying such treasures from the Novotel Suvarnabhumi airport hotel dining vaults as Niku Yaki sets and Kinsen and Dim Sum Buffets at Golden Village. The hotel near Bangkok airport will also be holding a moon cake feast from the 15th of September onwards - a great opportunity to get some authentic Asian delights, only minutes from the airport.

After your moon cake feast, or foreign-dignitary style dish (!), Novotel Suvarnabhumi actually allows you to use their facilities at an hourly room rate. You can freshen up with a swim and shower, or a more decadent treatment at Vous Spa. Depending on how long you have before your next flight, you can even have a nap (don't forget to book a wake-up call!) without having eight strangers all within two feet of you.

The beds are luxurious, and the hotel at Bangkok international airport is soundproofed - so there will be no worries about being able to sleep!

Although not quite of the same international standards as Novotel Suvarnabhumi airport hotel, Miracle Hometel in the Suvarnabhumi district is close to the airport, and offers some delicious Asian snacking options for stopover travelers. China Moon is their signature restaurant - the Cantonese dimsum buffet has been favorite of travelers since its inception.

EDO is the Japanese influenced restaurant, with all the traditional dishes including refreshing sushi and delicious teppenyaki. The room decor in the airport hotels rooms in Bangkok is contemporary Asian, if you have a chance to enjoy it, and the hotel can take the stress out of seeing Thailand (just for a little while!) by organizing one of their recommended tours.

While chocolate bars, instant coffee and pre-packaged cakes are the norm at many airports around the world, the Bangkok airport facilities are much more extensive, original ... and delicious! Look out for places like Asian Corner, in the International Departure Lounge, as well as Billion Zone and Fruitti - these eateries within Suvarnabhumi airport come highly recommended.
