Yorvit Torrealba hit a three-run double off NL saves leader Heath Bell to lead the Colorado Rockies to a 4-1 victory over the San Diego Padres. Get Colorado Rockies tickets and see Torrealba steal a base. The catcher's bases-loaded hit into left-center-field not only gave the Rockies the win, but also allowed them to be two games behind the first-place Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West. Colorado manager Jim Tracy said his team had some dramatic games since the end of May, but their game against the Padres goes to the top of the list. The Rockies, who have the best record in the league since June 4 at 62-28, had been held to just three hits off five Padres pitches before tagging Bell with his first blown save at home.

Bell allowed four runs on three hits and two walks. In the seventh inning Torrealba fell behind 0-2 before he connected on Bell's 2-2 fastball. Torrealba acknowledged that Bell surprised him with so many fastballs. The catcher continued to say when the count was 2-2; he thought Bell would through him a fastball since he doesn't want to go 3-2. The slugger knew the pitcher did not feel comfortable throwing his slider. Bell (5-3) struggled with his control throughout the seventh inning. The right-hander admitted that his mechanics were off and he wasn't hitting his spots. The relief pitcher regretted not throwing Torrealba a curve ball. Bell doesn't think Torrealba is a good breaking ball hitter, and if he threw a breaking ball, he might have won the game for the Padres.

San Diego was on the verge of handing Colorado a tough loss in their playoff race with 20 games left to go after Jorge De La Rosa walked in the game's only run in the first inning. But the Rockies came back and registered their eighth straight win as they increased their lead in the wild-card race to 5 games over the San Francisco Giants. Colorado improves their record to 10-1 in September. Torrealba was relieved to pull off a victory after being down 1-0 almost all game. The catcher is 13 for 18 (.722) with runners in scoring positions since May 29. Bell gave up a leadoff walk to Todd Helton, who was replaced by Mike McCoy. Brad Hawpe stepped up to the plate and singled with one out before pinch-hitter Jason Giambi walked to load the bases.

Bell struck out pinch hitter Matt Murton before Torrealba drove a ball which cleared the bases. Rafael Betancourt (3-1) got two outs and earned a win and Franklin Morales pitched in the ninth inning and recorded his sixth save in seven chances. De La Rosa gave up one run on five hits in seven innings. The left-hander walked four and struck out eight to set the club single-season record for strikeouts for a lefty (170). San Diego's Edward Mujica made his first career start and gave up two hits in four scoreless innings. The right-hander drew the start in place of rookie Mat Latos.
