New York Yankees Playoff Tickets - Possible Playoff Matchups

By Brent Warnken
Sep 25, 2009
The New York Yankees are in control of their division, leading the American League in terms of overall record and looking hot as they enter the middle of September. The Yanks are pretty much a sure thing to get into the postseason, but is it too early to begin hypothesizing about their possible playoff opponents? Is it against the rules to think that far ahead in the future and ponder the possible playoff matchups? Never! Let's first knock on wood, and then take a look at the way things could play out for New York in October. Make sure you get all the best New York Yankees playoff tickets online, because even if Yankee Stadium sells out, online ticket sellers might still be able to get you into the game.

Division Series - Right now the Yankees have the best chance of attaining the best record in the American League, winning home game advantage throughout the playoffs and playing the Detroit Tigers in their division series matchup. The Yankees already have 91 wins this year (as of September 12), and the next closest competitor in the AL is the Angels, who have a mere 85. The Tigers have only 75 wins and are thus the most likely team to wind up in the No. 4 seed in the playoffs. The Yankees and their fans ought to be fine with playing the Tigers in the first round of the playoffs. Out of the six times that the Yankees have played the Tigers this season, they've beaten them five and outscored the Tigers by a combined score of 30-15. Clearly the Yankees will be the overwhelming favorites. There is a slim chance that the Yankees will play the Angels or the Red Sox in the first round, but both L.A. and Boston have winning records against the Yankees this season. Let's hope we draw the Tigers.

Championship Series - Assuming the Yankees beat Detroit in the division series, they'll face the winner of the Boston-Los Angeles series (the most likely series at this point). As we mentioned above, the Yankees have a losing record this year against both the Red Sox (6-9) and the Angels (2-4), so things will be a lot tougher in the ALCS. Recent history isn't exactly doing anything for the Yankees, either. The most recent playoff meetings with the Angels and Red Sox happened back in 2004 and 2005. Back in 2005 the Yankees lost in the playoffs to the Angels and back in 2004 they lost to the Red Sox.

World Series - The Yankees don't have much experience against the National League's best teams this year. They played Philadelphia in a close series earlier in the season, but they have not played St. Louis, Los Angeles, Colorado or San Francisco this season. Yankees fans would find it immensely interesting to play the Dodgers, though, as there's the whole Brooklyn-New York connection, and the Joe Torre story lines would be hard to ignore.

So there you have it, the best possible playoff matchups for the New York Yankees. Whatever series the Yanks get into the games are sure to be packed to the brim. Finding a seat will be hard, so act fast when the tickets become available.
