Beach Guide For The Island Of Barbados
If you are planning a trip to the beautiful island of Barbados then you have no doubt thought about what beaches you will be spending your time lazing around. Barbados, a relatively flat, Caribbean island, is surrounded by beautiful sandy beaches and outlets for water sports.
If you are travelling along the East coast of Barbados you will find that the beaches are wider than anywhere else on the island. The easterly winds beat on the beaches daily and provide a warm breeze that keeps you cooler in the hot sun.
Find yourself going in a southerly or westerly direction and youwill find yourself being able to walk for miles literally on some of the most beautiful white sand beaches in the world. Don not be surprised to find pink coral exploding out of the landscape and into the water. The island is home to a surprising amount of coral formations and they act as a suitable model for any artist looking for inspiration.
Go north and you will find the cliffs. These massive rock formations slice through the crystal clear water hundreds of feet. Amongst the cliffs you will find an assortment of caves and shelters carved from the rock by millions of years of water beating on the islands coast. If you are lucky enough, on your travels along the northern coast of Barbados, you will find some sand dunes to explore. They are not everywhere and you may have to look for them, but tourists agree they are a spectacular natural occurrence in an otherwise flat island. You may find them among the cliffs and shelters where the wind has a life of its own.
You may be surprised to learn that there are no nude beaches anywhere on Barbados. Although the island has a reputable nightlife, drawing many a young couple or singles crowd to the island, the tourism board prides itself on the classiest experience you will find in the Caribbean, or in the world, for that matter, and they focus on family friendly fun. The beaches are open to every member of the public and many of the beach waterfront property owners are required by law to allow patrons access to the beaches on their land. This ensures you will never be turned away from a beach area.
Another nice feature about the beach life in Barbados is that vendors and products are strictly regulated. You will not find anyone bothering you to purchase goods while you are trying to relax in the sun. The popular tourist beaches are actually patrolled by police to ensure such practice does not take place. You are free to roam the regulated vendors and purchase as you see fit, of course. There is some good shopping to be had along the beautiful coastline. You will also find some very good restaurants, snack bars, and licensed bars where you can enjoy a drink.
If you prefer a calm swimming and relaxing experience then you will want to venture to the west coast. Typically the most popular side of the island, especially for bars and restaurants, the many beaches and swimming outlets you will find here offer calm seas and very safe swimming conditions. However, if you are a water sports lover and prefer a little more adventure in your day, then you will want to make your way to the south coast. Perfect for windsurfing and body surfing, the gentle rolling waves are great for hours of fun perfecting your hang time.
It is not recommended, however, to swim in many places on the east and north shores of the island. Strong and violent currents ravage the coast line and, with the exception of a few small swimming holes, which are clearly marked on the highways, you will want to just head to the westerly side of the island and save yourself the disappointment. Although, the drive will be beautiful!
At a variety of the beaches in Barbados you will find tidal pools, wading pools which naturally occur, cliffs of sandstone and coral, low lying rock formations that act as homes for many of the sea creatures found in the Caribbean, and an exciting collection of species that call these beaches home.
Wherever your travels take you while staying in Barbados, be sure they take you to the beach.
