A Poignant Reason To Go About Writing A Will
I was inspired to write this article after a particular death in the family. As well as being a very sad event, the situation was worsened slightly by the fact that the person had not looked into writing a will before they passed on. They had put it off for many years, as I well know, and in the end it was sudden passing-away, which is why there was no chance to draw up a document.
Going about the business of writing a will is not one that anyone wishes to have to do, but it is simply a fact of life. And the vast majority of us want our loved ones to be safe and secure - and even if we don't have a huge amount of material wealth, it means a lot to have our special possessions distributed among sons, daughter, husbands, wives and friends.
The problem that occurred in my family was that two sisters, who were daughters of the recently passed (their father), were both very headstrong young girls - and both believed they were the favourite of their daddy. There was one particular incident that involved a painting of a bull terrier; the deceased had always loved this painting, and in all honesty it was worth quite bit of money, as the artist was well-known locally. As the deceased never went about writing a will, the fate of the painting was never made clarified - until it was too late.
In fact, of all the possessions in question, this was by far the most valuable. This is arguably why the two girls ended up fighting over the picture. The situation was that one of the sisters lived in the home of their deceased father, while the other lived a few miles away. But one day, when she thought the resident sister was at work, the other sister sneaked in to the house via the back door (she knew where the key was hidden), and tiptoed upstairs to where the painting was kept - in the deceased's bedroom.
The next part of the story will make anyone who hasn't thought about writing a will consider it very carefully. She went into the room and found the painting of the old bull terrier, and lifted it off the wall. As she was sneaking down the stairs, to her astonishment her sister appeared on the landing with a hanky covering her face. She had taken the day off because of a bout of the flu. But despite being ill, she immediately lunged for her sister in order to prevent her from taking the valuable painting.
The rest is a sad story, as they grappled with each other at the top of the stairs, and both tumbled to their demise. It is certainly a story that makes people wish they had gone about writing a will. Of course you might ask how I know so much about the deceased. The truth is, I know the dead man. It was me.
