Pittsburgh Steelers Tickets - Steelers Beat Titans in Overtime

By Brent Warnken

Jeff Reed kicked a 33-yard field goal with 4:32 gone in overtime and the Super Bowl champion Steelers beat the Tennessee Titans 13-10. Pittsburgh's running game was stuffed by Tennessee's tough defense, but Pittsburgh quarterback Ben Roethlisberger got his offense going, especially when he found his favorite target open downfield, Hines Ward. Get Pittsburgh Steelers tickets and see Roethlisberger throw a TD pass. Big Ben went 33 for 43 for 363 yards, with Santonio Holmes making nine catches for 131 yards and a touchdown. Although Ward coughed up the ball towards the end of the fourth quarter, he had a very productive game. The wide receiver finished with eight catches for 103 yards. The Steelers are concerned about safety Troy Polamalu, who sprained the medial collateral ligament in his knee on a blocked field goal.

Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said the injury usually sidelines a player 3 to 6 weeks. Tennessee lost the coin toss to start overtime and the offense never got a chance to snap the ball during the extra quarter. Roethlisberger found Ward for 11 yards, Holmes for 11 and rookie Mike Wallace for 22. That was more than enough to get within Reed's field goal range. The kicker stated that he's been in a lot of close games with the Steelers, and his team usually comes out on top. While Pittsburgh ended up winning on two Reed field goals, you can make a strong case that Tennessee lost because Rod Bironas couldn't convert two field goals from inside the 40.

Titans' wide receiver Nate Washington said the Pittsburgh Steelers did not beat Tennessee. The former Steelers' wide out stated that the "Tennessee Titans beat the Tennessee Titans." Pittsburgh looked ready to win late in regulation when Big Ben hooked up with Ward on a 30-yard completion. But as Ward ran past the 4 yard line, trying to muscle his way closer to the goal line, Michael Griffin stripped the ball and Stephen Tulloch recovered with only one minute left of regulation. After the game, Tennessee coach Jeff Fisher acknowledged that his team had opportunities to win the game, but Bironas missed one field goal and had another one blocked. Fischer added that the Titans are a good football team and will bounce back from the loss.

Tennessee spent the first quarter thrashing a Steelers offense that managed to gain just one yard. After Bironas' 31-yarder was blocked by Aaron Smith, both teams came alive on offense. In the second quarter, Roethlisberger needed only five plays to lead a 79-yard drive in which he found familiar target Ward for 29 yards and then threw to Holmes for a 34-yard touchdown. With the Steelers defense missing two key players, Polamalu and linebacker La Marr Woodley (leg cramps), Titans' quarterback Kerry Collins took advantage of the situation and found rookie Kenney Britt for a 57-yard completion to the 14. The confident Collins then found a wide open Justin Gage in the end zone with 48 seconds left in the first half. The Titans started 10-0 last season. Big Ben is 4-0 with nine TD passes and two picks in openers.
