Penn State Football Tickets - Nittany Lions Win over Orange 28-7
Daryll Clark threw for 240 yards and three TDs, Evan Royster had two TDs, and the No. 7 Nittany Lions defeated Syracuse 28-7 at Beaver Stadium. Get Penn State Football tickets and see Clark step up in the pocket before he launches a pass into the end zone. The Nittany Lions' talent overwhelmed the Orange, even with Penn State playing choppy ball for the second straight week. Coach Joe Paterno's offense had problems running the ball, especially on short yardage in the red zone. The 82-year-old coach said his team played well enough to win two games and plans on getting better. In the air, however, Penn State dominated. Royster motioned out of the backfield and turned a short throw into a 49-yard touchdown on the game's opening drive. The tailback displayed his nifty moves as he faked the safety out and pulled away into the end zone.
Royster added a 12-yard TD run to give Penn State a 14-0 lead in the second quarter. The tailback finished with 41 yards on the ground and 61 yards receiving. Paterno, who improved to 23-4 against Syracuse, was impressed with Royster's performance. The coach told the press "He can do it all." But Royster wasn't the only athlete who exhibited his talent on the field. Wide receiver Graham Zug added career-highs of six catches and 79 yards, including a 20-yard scoring strike from Clark to give the Nittany Lions' a three touchdown lead in the third quarter. How was Penn State's defense? Not too shabby. Jared Odrick led the push from the front four with six tackles and a half-sack.
Linebacker Sean Lee had a phenomenal game, registering a career-high 13 tackles. He looked good, especially since returning from a knee injury that kept him out last season. Syracuse coach Dough Marrone thought he could fool Penn State by alternating quarterbacks, but his game plan backfired, especially in the first half in which the Orange managed only four first downs. Marrone stated that his team needs two quarterbacks to help them win this year. Orange quarterback Greg Paulus found some success in the pocket in the second half. The quarterback went without a huddle most of the time and was able to hit passes on play-action, screens and rollouts. Paulus acknowledged that Syracuse did not take advantage of some of the opportunity they had.
Syracuse marched down the field, all the way to Penn State's five-yard line in the third quarter. But that drive ended on fourth down after wide receiver Mike Williams dropped a pass in the end zone .Williams' streak of 10 straight games with a TD catch came to an end. In the fourth quarter, the Orange had a nice drive going until Lee sacked Paulus on a blitz for a 13-yard loss. Later in the fourth, Paulus tried to throw a deep pass in Syracuse territory, but the ball was tipped by Odrick and intercepted by linebacker Nathan Stupar. Paulus did throw a TD pass to Donte Davis for a 16-yard strike. It was Syracuse's only score of the game. The touchdown came one play after Nittany Lions' backup quarterback Kevin Newsome lost a fumble on a sack by Mikhail Marinovich.
