Tips to Gain Weight and Increase Muscle Size
One thing you notice when you go the gym is the continuous errors people make in their training when trying to gain muscle - poor technique, poor concentration or lack of effort. So what are the major problems how can you fix them?
NOT PUSHING YOURSELF HARD ENOUGH?
We see this again and again, people not training as heavy as they could because they are unwilling to move out of their comfort zone. The idea behind weight training is to challenge yourself. To gain muscle and build strength you need to make your muscles work harder than they are accustomed to - this is called the overload principle.
Make a mental note after each set and ask yourself - could I have lifted more weight with good form? If the answer is yes, then increase your weight so that you take your last rep to failure or close to it.
ARE YOU PUSHING YOURSELF TOO HARD?
Overtraining occurs when the body is stressed beyond its ability to recover. If this occurs on a continual basis it will hinder your progress and even lead to muscle loss.
Your ability to recover will play a key role in maintaining and increasing muscle growth. In order to transport vital nutrients to muscles to facilitate energy and development and to gain muscle you need to make sure that your body gets the opportunity to rest, you do not need to train every day!
ARE YOU USING TOO MUCH WEIGHT?
Loading the bar with too much weight not only compromises form but can also lead to serious injury. If you cannot perform a weight with correct form then other muscles rather than the target ones bear the stress of the weight which is extremely counter-productive swinging arm bicep curls will not lead to muscle growth and bulging biceps!
Use a lighter weight until you feel ready to lift more. Another good idea is to use a spotter to help you if you are not sure you can lift the weight with good form.
NOT USING A JOURNAL?
Documenting your progress can help you learn the best way for your body to gain muscle, what is not working for you and what to ensure you reach your potential.
Record the exercise, weight, number of reps/sets performed and the rest time between sets. It is also a good idea to record how your body feels after each workout; whether you feel you can push yourself harder next time.
These are just a few of the problems that can be easily fixed in order to achieve the best results in the gym and gain muscle you desire.
