Four Keys To Building Team Morale Human Resources-Team Building
Did you know that in spite of all the systems and polices needed to run a company that there is one thing which can make or break any company in spite of how great its systems are? That one thing is people. People are the most valuable resource of any company and the they are the key to making any policy or system work well. So how can you make the most of your human resource and ensure that all of the others are well spent? The answer lies within your ability to implement four specific strategies in your interactions with people.
The first thing is that managing people is all about building relationships based on trust. This may seem obvious to state, but many people are unaware of how to actually accomplish this. The best rule is to treat relationships like living things more than contractual agreements. People have three basic emotional needs which must be met in the workplace the same as anywhere else. These needs are validation, security and excitement and they are not going to change just because a company refuses to acknowledge them. Better to focus on meeting these needs in order to make sure that people are always giving their best.
That said, the second step is giving people validation or valuing them for who they are. The only way to do this is to express it to them in a way that cannot be overlooked, the simplest way is to tell them that you appreciate them not just what they have done. For better or worse, many people attach their personal sense of value to the opinions of others and so you may as well validate people by expressing clear appreciation. Most often, this is just as important to people as the need for financial compensation.
Third, learn to identify a person?s tendency towards the need for excitement or security. While everyone needs both there are those who need security more and who are therefore going to be more receptive to duties which require repetition and certainty. These people are also the least likely to work well under pressure and are more likely to excel in making sure that things are done the right way the first time around. On the other hand, those who value excitement are more likely to meet a challenge and therefore will not mind a bit of pressure. Assigning tasks according to these needs will ensure that the team morale will be high and that each person will thrive in their position.
Finally, follow the golden rule of verifying with people that you understand them before you try to make your point. Many conflicts arise simply out of misunderstandings which could have been clarified if someone had taken the initiative to do so upfront. Failing to verify with people that you understand them can waste a lot of time and damage relationships within the work place. However, if you verify with someone that you understand them then you can be assured that you will win their loyalty and respect. Follow these principles and your most valuable resource will ensure that your other resources are properly managed.
