After 30 Years, The Godfather of Gore Releases New Film
Slasher movie fans call Herschell Gordon Lewis "The Godfather of Gore." He has Directed, written and produced more than 37 films in his career. Most of them in the 60's and 70's
Then he left the movie industry and the world of gore films. He worked as an advertising man and today he is considered one of the world's leading direct response marketers. He often earns more money a year from advertising than several of his films have grossed in their lifetime.
But even after his long absense, the infamous gore director has kept his love for film-making. The carnage-craving director can't stay away any longer. "Making movies is like Malaria" he says. "It gets in your blood and stays there."
His latest film, currently in post production is called "The Uh-Oh Show." The premise is about a hit game show where contestants win a lifetime of wealth if they answer the questions correctly... but get their limbs hacked off if they answer wrong.
Only Herschell Gordon Lewis would dare produce a film this... unique.
Recently, Herschell Gordon Lewis has become more mainstream, with a reverent reference in the award winning movie, "Juno." But his films themselves are anything but mainstream.
"The Uh-Oh Show will, I think, mark a change in the direction of this kind of movie," Lewis says. "Of late, a lot of these movies are derivative. You think you're seeing the same movie over and over again. I don't think they're going to think that when they see The Uh-Oh Show! We mix outrageous splatter effects with hot humor so everyone knows immediately that it's just a gag."
Lewis's films defy all generation gaps. The reactions are the same, regardless of age. Either audiences think he should be in jail for scarring their minds... or they love it and find it disturbingly hilarious
The Uh-Oh Show! is scheduled for film festival releases in December of 2009 and on DVD early in 2010.
