Why Do So Many People Have a Home Security Alarm System?

It seems that one of the most frequent questions Im asked is "Why do so many people have a home security alarm system?" In truth, there are almost as many answers to that question as there are people who own alarm systems.

1. People don't feel as safe as they used to feel. Crime rates might be rising. But the real reason people dont feel as safe is that the media informs us every evening of all of the crimes occurring in homes in our area. Whether there is or isnt more crime, we are certainly more aware of neighborhood crime.

2. We are in the midst of a difficult recession. The news is filled with comments about the economy causing an increase in the crime rate, especially burglaries. People want the protection of a home security alarm system.

3. When people buy a home in a neighborhood where a large number of people have a home security alarm system they tend to believe they also need a system. The assumption is that there is a good reason the neighbors have security systems.

4. Many home builders are including wiring for home security alarm systems as part of the basic construction package on new homes. It is hard to know whether builders are responding to a trend or there is a trend that follows what builders are installing in new homes.

5. More people have second homes or vacation homes. Many people also have garages, workshops, home offices and other types of accessory buildings. They want these properties protected with a home security alarm system. In addition, people travel more and leave their homes unattended.

6. Monitoring children's rooms or play areas, particularly when children are left with sitters is a response to media reports of sitters abusing children left in their care. The cameras that are part of a home security alarm system can often be monitored over the internet, allowing parents to "check in" remotely.

7. A greater number of people with disabilities are able to live independently. A home security alarm system can include special monitoring and alert features to provide extra protection or to notify the monitoring company to send help immediately. For example, monitors can provide alerts if people spend more than an hour in the bathroom or if there is no activity in the area where medications are kept at appropriate times of the day. And there are emergency help buttons worn on the body.

8. People who worry about elderly parents who want to "age in place" can install a complete home security alarm system that includes monitors for activity in various parts of the house. This might include monitoring for activity in the area where medications are kept and appropriate times of the day, or monitoring for activity outside the bedroom between the hours of 6 and 10 a.m.

A number of the components of a complete home security alarm system can be used in more than one way. These can provide assurance to family members and safety for individuals. The ability to monitor over the internet greatly enhances family safety.

The best way to learn about the devices and monitoring options available in a home security alarm system is to consult a security professional. Together you can create a system that fits your needs, your family's lifestyle and your budget.
