Yeast Infections - Why do They Happen

By Danielle Clement
Oct 7, 2009
It is not always clear or simple to identify the causes of yeast infections in men, women or even children. The first thing those suffering from recurring yeast infections do is to look for what the cause is. After all once you know that you can better defend yourself as with any other illnesses.

Yeast Infection is a Candida fungal infection. Whoever it has infected it is painful, uncomfortable and for adults embarrassing too. Children can get it from diapers not being changed frequently enough or can suffer from Thrush, an infection of the mouth, from bottles not being adequately cleaned.

In men yeast infection happen normally because of having sex or sexual contact with a woman who is infected with a vaginal yeast infection. When a man enters the woman's vagina the opening of the penis is at risk. If there is a yeast infection in the vagina it will travel up the penis via that opening into the urethra. The symptoms can range from an itch that is merely annoying to more severe itching with lesions up the shaft as well as blisters. As with vaginal yeast infections, penile yeast infections are painful, uncomfortable and embarrassing and men may have trouble urinating as well as having problems sexually.

A vaginal yeast infection is the most common yeast infection which is why it is mistakenly thought of as a female problem. This is because the vagina is such a perfect environment for the yeast to grow. Dark, moist and warm. Reasons for women getting the infection vary though quite often there are hormonal causes so if a woman is on her period, going through the menopause, on birth control pills or pregnant, she is at a higher risk to get a yeast infection. Women always wearing tight under wear made of synthetic materials need to realize they are encouraging the yeast to stay and flourish as there is not enough air circulation around the genital area.

As men can get penile yeast infection from sex with an infected woman it is important to wear condoms during intercourse. If the woman is treating herself but has unprotected sex she is passing the yeast to her male partner. When she thinks she has gotten rid of it, he will pass the yeast back again and so the cycle is hard to break. Whether you have one partner or more safe sex is important to practice.
