The United States Mint, over the years, has earned a reputation for producing some of the world's most beautifully designed coins in the world. Most are created as official currency, while some are mainly collectible. The most famous and most highly regarded coin is the American Silver Eagle Coin.

In 1986, the United States started minting a silver bullion coin they called the American Silver Eagle. This coin is based off of Adolph A. Weinman's half dollar coin from 1916 called the "Walking Liberty." This coin was minted by the United States from 1916 - 1947. This coins signature was a mark of "AAW" that appears under the eagle's wing feathers on the back side. This coin has a value of 50 cents.

The Silver Eagle coin is a silver bullion coin and has a face value of one dollar. Over 130 million of these coins have been minted since they first came out. These coins are made to meet strict specifications and qualifications.

The weight and purity of these coins has a guarantee by the United States government. The official silver bullion coin of the United States is the Silver Eagle and each coin contains minimally one troy ounce of 99. 9% pure silver per government standards.

These coins are the only type of silver coin allowed in an IRA investment account. The prices of these coins are based off market value for silver plus an additional amount to make sure minting and distribution costs are covered.

There are three versions of the Silver Eagle coin. The first version is the regular bullion version. This version is available from authorized coin dealers and bullion dealers. The second version is the collectible proof. This version is the version available each year directly from the United States Mint. This version comes with a protective case and a certificate of authenticity from the Mint. The third version is the uncirculated or burnished version. This version is the most recent version and has the "W" mint mark and is struck on burnished specialty blanks.

Widely sought after by coin collectors and precious metal collectors, the Silver Eagle definitely is. Collectors consider this coin to be the "modern day silver dollar" and often pay close attention to series dates, including hard to find anniversary issues.

The American Silver Eagle coins are wonderful investments and are excellent collectibles. They are well worth the cost both now and into the future.
