Staying Healthy For The Home Care Agency Provider
One of the most emotionally and physically demanding jobs is working for a home care agency and caring for elderly and ill patients in their homes. Because those patients and their families rely on those providers a great deal, it is important to stay healthy, both body and soul.
When someone has a stressful job and works long hours, burnout is a common danger. When that occurs, many seek the help of counselors or doctors to help them through the situation.
The key to overcoming burnout is to simply step out of the situation and take a look at it from the outside in. Herein I will review some of the recommended steps for overcoming burnout.
Some advice that is often given is that you should never take your work home with you. Whenever possible, you should leave it at the office. It?s a little different in this industry, though, because rather than numbers and papers you are working with actual people. So how can you do this?
In these cases, what you need to remember is to try and break the cycle of twenty-four hour worry and concern. You need to have empathy and compassion to do your job well, but fretting about patients round the clock will leave you emotionally drained. And most of your patients are going to depend on you for emotional stability.
You will also be asked to do a lot of physical chores, from lifting to bathing to exercising your clients. You?ll have to be physically fit, so make sure that you are exercising, eating right, and getting plenty of sleep. This way you?ll be able to maintain a positive attitude and be fit to deal with any crises that may come up.
Another important piece of the staying-well puzzle for the home care agency provider is understanding how to cope with the ups and downs of home care. Workers will encounter deaths, sorrow, distraught and excitable patients and relatives, and other urgent situations that require a clear head and calm manner. Taking time for meditation, deep breathing exercises, or prayer will do a lot to help.
If it feels like burnout is begging to set in, as a home care agency worker you should always step back and reassess the situation. Examine your current lifestyle and ask yourself: am I taking my work home with me? Am I staying physically and emotionally fit? Do I have the ability to separate myself from a situation when it is necessary?
