Should You Use Woodworking Machines?

By Jerry Taylor

So you've finally decided to take up woodworking as a hobby. You're excited about it and want to get started. You want to cut and drill everything personally. You want to feel like an artist and sculptor. But hold up and hear me out first! Even though woodworking is a wonderful hobby and requires a personal touch to it, the reality is that with modern technology comes convenience.

Nowadays most woodworking projects can be completed in the fraction of the time with the help of woodworking machines. Some purists might argue and say the personal touch is lost. That may be true but consider this - Should you give up taking a car to get to a destination faster just because you can walk? Of course, Im not saying a woodworking project should entirely be cut and pieced by machines, but at least some of the more dangerous and time-consuming tasks can be automated.

With that being said, let's take a quick look at why woodworking machines may benefit us. Firstly, they can increase our output drastically as compared to manual work. Secondly, they give a very consistent and uniformed texture and cuts to the woods. For manual work the quality may vary, depending on the skill of the person.

So what types of woodworking machines are there? Well the few most used machines are the mortisers, dust collectors and CNC routers. So what is a CNC router? It is basically a kind of snap-on tool which can be used for drilling, trimming or sanding. As for the mortisers, they are divided into the chain and chisel types. These help to accentuate the depth and width of a drilled hole. Lastly for dust collectors, it helps to clean up the mess made after a day's worth of cutting and drilling.

That's just an introduction to the world of woodworking machines and tools. Obviously there are much more applications to these tools, but suffice to say, using these woodworking machines can be a great help and asset to the woodworking enthusiast.

Effectiveness and efficiency are key, so for some of the more die-hard old fashion woodworking hobbyists out there do consider at least trying out some of these very useful woodworking automated tools.
