The Opportunity for Massachusetts Teaching Jobs
Like the rest of the nation, Massachusetts has seen an economic downturn over the past year and a half. Although this has translated into fewer open jobs in most sectors of the economy, there have still been vacancies reported for dozens of Massachusetts teaching jobs. This is due in part to a recent change in the states licensing requirements, and in part to the general instability of the national job market.
Changes to the states licensing requirements: In early 2009, the state of Massachusetts implicated a licensing exam for all elementary teachers that requires educators to prove their skills in the field of arithmetic in order to be established as a licensed teach. This is in contrast to the earlier system where teachers were required to take a test on multiple subjects. (This test contained only a few arithmetic questions.)
Almost three-fourths of the aspiring elementary school teachers who took the new exam this year failed the new math section. As a result, there were some Massachusetts teaching jobs available for educators who had a stronger background in math, or who held multiple-subject teaching licenses.
The national career market has also played a major role in the opening of the Massachusetts teaching jobs market. Before the arithmetic exam was implemented, many teachers packed up and relocated to other states that they saw as less competitive to get their foot in the door on a teaching job. Also, many married teachers found themselves relocated because of their spouses lack of job opportunity in Massachusetts. Whichever way you cut it, the economy has created larger opening in Massachusetts for teaching jobs.
What the economic forecasts are saying: The new economic forecast predicts the recession in Massachusetts to go deeper and longer than the national recession as a whole. Job losses this year are expected to exceed the 2001 downturn. However, it is still clear that teachers who have a solid resume or are available for relocation will most likely find that there is still plenty of opportunity in for Massachusetts teaching jobs.
