Velvet Curtains
Once you've decided on velvet curtains for your home, you'll still have several decisions to make. Keep in mind that when done right, window treatments can be one of the least expensive ways to completely change the look and feel of a room. Before you get started in choosing your velvet curtains, you'll want to consider what your goals for the room are.
Your first decision to make is whether you want your velvet curtains to be overstated or understated. If you have larger windows and you want to make them less of a focal point for your room, choose velvet curtains that will fall just to the base of your window sill and that won't go further than the edges. On the other hand, if you want a bold look, hang your curtains all the way from the ceiling to the floor, which will not only be a dramatic look, but can help make your windows appear larger and taller as well.
Once you've made a decision on the right length for velvet curtains, you'll need to decide what color you'd like. Most velvet curtains look best in a solid color. You should already have a focal point for your room that incorporates several colors. When choosing curtains, you can either pick one color and have only that color used, or you might choose a base color for your curtains and hang a valance with a corresponding color. The goal is to make sure that the color scheme throughout your room is reflected in your velvet curtains.
After you have a general idea of the size and color you want for your velvet curtains, you'll need to focus on getting the best deal. Remember that getting the best value doesn't always mean getting the lowest price. You can probably find some bargain basement prices for velvet curtains, but those of poor quality are likely to not hang correctly, look cheap and be difficult to clean and maintain. Spending a few extra dollars for quality velvet curtains is likely to be the best overall value in the long run.
Remember that your velvet curtains are only a part of your overall window treatments. Take care to choose the right rods, tie backs and other accessories. Some people prefer to choose accessories that match their velvet curtains, while others like contrasting colors and styles. The right choice for you will depend on how bold you want your window treatments to be.
