How To Perform NLP On Others?

By Andy D Gallagher
Oct 18, 2009
Neuro means understanding the brain and how it works. Linguistic refers to communication aspects, verbal and non-verbal, and the behavioural and thinking pattern of people is known as Programming. Thus, the name Neuro Linguistic Programming was created.

NLP was first developed in 1970s by Richard Bandier, an information scientist, and John Grinder, a linguist. Richard and John were intrigued by the influence that people had over each other, and others who were able to mimic those who were most influential.

Thus, they were interested in the effectiveness of the behaviour of highly prominent people. They compiled their research at the University of California. Their research became special, because they combined their talents that is, their careers, and then used insights from behavioural psychology, and general theory systems to discover the secrets of effectual communication.

The methodology called human modelling, which seeks and explains the processes that people experience, was carried out by Richard and John. Thus, it discovers things through studying a person, someone who does something specific, or is proficient at his work.

As an example, in case you are interested in how to design an advertising campaign, you would first consult a campaign designer, since this person is a professional as far as his field is concerned. This person will easily be able to respond to your questions, such as asking them about their job, how they go about it, what works in their fields, and what does not etc.

Additional NLP technology helps to uncover more than what is right on the surface, stuff your model might not be aware of. To do this well, it requires you to study the thought processes, personal experiences, and observe the behaviour of your model. Behaviour pattern includes specific indicators that people themselves are not aware of, but NLP practitioners are able to notice and understand what they mean. For example, eye movements, pupil dilation, certain gestures, breathing pattern, changes in voice tone, or even subtle changes, such as changes in skin colour.

Performing NLP means to be sure about what we know, what we think, and use it appropriately. It means that by changing your thinking, you can transform what you think. It assists in adjusting your thought, and behavioural patterns to better suit your goals.

When you try NLP on your own without proper training, you could create much chaos in the mind of your model to the extent that they might need to be hospitalised. NLP is so efficient that improper training can do a lot of damage. It is also true that a lot of people have been going around claiming to be experts at NLP, but since previously there was no quality controls, even the people who know very little about it, go around teaching it. Truthfully, NLP takes time, patience, and knowledge, of the right kind. On another level, it may be simple to teach, but it requires experience to be able to use the techniques effectively.
