Wasting Away on the Web

Aug 18, 2007
There's something just kind of fun about surfing the Internet. Especially when you don't have a particular goal in mind. Just wandering around, clicking on what looks interesting, maybe trying something like StumbleUpon to find unusual sites you aren't going to find any other way.

There's just something fun about being online.

You can wander about. Keeping it family friendly or not, depending on your preferences. Always aware that some sites aren't so safe for your computer, but having fun reading things you never thought you'd hear of.

Such as roaches drooling on command. That's quite the mental picture, isn't it?

How did we cope without the Internet? Sometimes it seems hard to imagine. Just staring at the television, whatever was on was what you could watch. Unless you rented a video or something.

But the selection didn't compare to what's available now. Just think of how much you can watch on YouTube. Missed your favorite television show and didn't record it on your DVR? It might just be available on the Internet. Want to see cats and dogs living together in peace (or not)? You can find a video of that. Plus all kinds of stupid human tricks, politics and more.

Would anyone even notice these days if the world went mad? Madder than it is already, I mean?

And you can keep up with at least the basics of any topic you like. Love politics? Hate politics but love to rant about it anyhow? You can find ways to entertain yourself online.

And if you're a science geek you can keep up with the basics of recent discoveries and know if you want to check things out in more depth.

You can find someone who shares your problems, almost no matter how obscure the issue is. It can be health problems, family issues, work problems, etc., and there will probably be someone else ranting about it online. Maybe even a forum to join.

This makes up the half crazed world of the Internet, where you can interact with people whose names you don't know, who could live across the street or across the ocean. There's an insane amount of information to be had, to be shared.

All this is why people enjoy being online so much. There's just so much you can do online. You can be yourself or someone else and few people will ever know the difference. You can indulge your curiosity on just about any topic. You can shout out your opinions and find out what other people really think about what you think.

Until you realize it's all too close to when you need to get up in the morning and head in to work. Maybe you can just claim it was a wild party. Sure, that's why you're so exhausted. Nope, you weren't sitting at home playing online. You have more of a life than that, really.
