Jewelry Design: From Concept to Creation
When you wear a piece of jewelry, you probably realize how beautiful it is or how wonderfully it coordinates with your wardrobe. What you may or may not notice, however, is the finest details that make your piece of jewelry unique. Every detail of your jewelry, whether it be large or small, began as a concept in the mind of the designer and evolved into the piece of artwork that you wear today. Inspiration is a process by which someone is inspired by another person or object. When it comes to jewelry design, inspiration can come in many forms. From one's own love of jewelry to something as simple as the coloration of a flower, a designer can be inspired by a variety of things. Once an idea begins to form, it's time to start thinking about the next logical step in the design process. Quite simply, an idea is a concept. When a jewelry designer creates a new concept, he/she typically sketches it out onto paper. The first drawing is usually a rough draft, and may change as the design becomes more detailed. A designer often makes a note to specify the size that they prefer their new design to be, which will help further down the line as they begin the manufacturing process. If the finished piece is to include gemstones, the designer may use colored pencils to illustrate how the various colors will come together to form a certain look. Once the design is laid out, the designer must then choose the metal and/or gemstones (if applicable) to be used in the jewelry. Many jewelers prefer to work with precious metal, which includes sterling silver, gold and platinum. When the metal is chosen, the designer then begins to work on the creation process. Some may work with molds, while others may assemble jewelry from precious metal findings. The actual manufacturing process depends greatly on the designs itself, along with the designer's ability to work with various jewelry tools. When you walk into a jewelry store or browse the virtual aisle of your favorite online shop, you will likely be staring at a variety of jewelry designs. Behind each necklace, bracelet, ring and earring is an idea, a dream and a hope that the design will be loved and worn by many. If you ask most designers, they will tell you that they create what they like or what they, themselves, would wear. From concept to creation, a jewelry design is an idea that comes to life through a process that may take hours, days, weeks or even months. The next time that you search through your jewelry collection or look for a new accessory to purchase, look at every little detail in the piece. It can be the smallest detail, after all, that makes the biggest impact on the overall design. Regardless of your taste and style, there is a jewelry design that can quench your thirst. From vintage inspirations to modern and even abstract, jewelry is one form of art that's meant to be both worn and displayed.
