Is Keeping Your House Clean Making You Sick?
A vacuum cleaners job is to clean up the dirt and dust in your home. You take your vacuum out of the closet and proceed to vacuum your home. You then put your vacuum back and give yourself an internal high five for making your home clean. But how clean is it?
Bet you would be surprised to find out that your home is not truly clean unless you used a vacuum cleaner with a true sealed system and a HEPA filter. Why is this so? Because "pet allergens and indoor dust, which contains the highest concentrations of hazardous materials like heavy metals, lead, pesticides, and other chemicals, are found in higher concentrations in the smallest particles of the dust", explains David MacIntosh, MD. He is principal scientist at Environmental Health & Engineering (EH&E), an environmental consulting and engineering services firm based in Needham, Mass.
"The everyday habit of cleaning with a conventional vacuum cleaner results in a burst of particles in the air and then they settle back down over the course of hours," says MacIntosh.
The solution to this potential sickening problem is to purchase a vacuum cleaner that has a sealed system and true HEPA filtration. This will ensure that no particles will escape into the air. One company that excels at producing sealed system vacuums with true HEPA filtration is Miele. When you vacuum with one of these vacuums you know our home is truly clean.
I know when I bought my vacuum it said the vacuum that had a HEPA filter that could trap 99.97 percent of the particles at .3 microns. I know my home is clean after I use my vacuum. WRONG!!! The HEPA filter does filter the air but the vacuum leaked out allergens and such way before it got to the HEPA filter due to flimsy construction.
Your vacuum cleaner must be a sealed system for the air to be totally clean coming out of the vacuum. All the released air from the vacuum must go through the HEPA filter otherwise the HEPA filter is not able to perform its job with efficiency.
I did not know that the vacuum has to be a sealed system for all the air to go through the HEPA filter. If the vacuum is not a sealed system then the air will be leaked out before the air gets to the HEPA filter making the HEPA filter useless. I now know that the stats you see on the filter is just that stats filter. I will not be fooled in the future. I now know I need a sealed vacuum with a HEPA filter to get truly clean air. So to get my home the cleanest I will need to purchase a new vacuum and the Miele vacuums are a great choice.
