Survival Tips For Studying at University

By Nick Sanders
Oct 21, 2009
University is a competitive environment and a number of students fail to last the first term. Survival at university becomes difficult more many students and whilst their attempts at survival are ok, many individuals face a number of problems.

1. Balance your life - the most challenging problem that many students face is balancing different activities in their new lifestyle. As a student, you will need to balance your studies, sports, resting and eating. Most students will commonly forget to eat and others will not realise that they were expected at football practice 3 hours ago. Not having a balance of all of these things will cause you to act sluggish and not give each of the different tasks your full attention - you should always make sure you have relaxation time.

2. Attitude - you should look to maintain a positive attitude when at university. If you don't quite make it when completing a task you should look on it as a learning curve and decide where you need to improve - things can always turn out worse. Look on the positive side and this will reduce the amount of stress that you are under. Also, you should have a positive attitude towards forming new friendships with people as this is always a good experience.

3. Adjust to the culture - each academic institution will have its own unique structure and culture and this will be something that you should pick up on quickly. You will want to integrate with people and the 'way of doing things', so that you know what is expected of you and what you can expect to happen around you.

4. Personal issues - there may be a few times when personal issues arise during your time at university. You will want to make sure that you solve any personal issues that come apparent as these will more than likely affect your studies at college. You could try talking these issues through with a friend, which will make you feel much better.

5. Know the system - you should ensure that you have adequate knowledge of the different rules and regulations that the academic institution has. You should make sure that you are aware of the different procedures that have been put in place to govern submissions of academic work, GPA requirements and appeals procedures.

6. Manage Time - you should try to manage your time in an efficient manner, plan your schedule and make a timetable. You should also try to achieve your goals in small steps as success does not come in abundance. It will be these smaller steps that, when followed consistently, will give you a great success.

7. Set goals - this decision is very important and will decide your future. You should have a clear view of your goals and remember you cannot achieve success until you have a specified goal in life. To have a clear view of your goal, ask yourself these questions: a. What is my desired destination in 4 or 5 years time? b. How will I get there? c. Can my present studies take me there? d. What are the other things I need to do? e. What are the obstacles in my way? Asking these questions will help you set a clear path.

Allowing yourself to answer the questions in this article will aid you in your time in academia and help you become a better individual when venturing into the wider world.
