Web Based Intranets Over Traditional Software Solutions
The typical way to implement an intranet is to acquire a software package, tweak it for your own needs, then install it on your system.
But a big shift has taken place over the last couple of years, installing a web-based solution.
If you are undecided on whether to install software or go with a web-based intranet, consider this:
1. Intranets only work when everyone uses them.
For everyone to use an intranet, it must be easy to use and yet powerful enough to take the place of every local software program they currently run on their computer. The intranet should also save you money in terms of maintaining.
This is why intranets often mimic a web browser feel: because everyone is familiar with how a web browser operates. If you know how to use a Web browser, you know how to use an intranet service.
In stark contrast, think of all the business software that has failed over the years: Word Star, Word Perfect, DBase, RBase, Lotus 123. These software programs failed when Microsoft introduced a standardized suite of office products that used similar menus, tasks, and options, and even the ability to interact between these various applications.
This is the plight of traditional, out-of-the-box software solutions. Unlike web-based intranets, they force users into a constrained environment requiring in-depth training, built around rules designed for the group, rather than the individual.
2. Software based solutions have larger costs.
Software installed on each computer requires lots of internal support both for the software and for the network. The ongoing maintenance costs and down time can cost a company a lot of money.
System integration, implementation, maintenance, technology upgrades, training and user support are all on-going tasks that represent a significant, recurring investment. The cost can be substantial, far exceeding your initial license cost.
3. Web-based intranets are cheaper.
Unlike software, web-based intranets offer a fixed monthly fee, usually from $6 to $12 per user. This includes all training, upgrades, and user support issues. Your IT staff will have very little involvement, if any, with your web-based intranet.
These are only a few of the reasons why more corporations are changing from software based solutions to a web-based intranet.
