Bed Wetting Children And How To Handle The Problem
Its is quite common for boys to continue bed wetting for longer than girls. For example, most girls have broken this habit by the time they are 4 years old, whereas with boys it is far more common for them to still be bed wetting at this age. Due to these differences between the sexes, its important to carefully consider all factors when deciding on a strategy to handle bed wetting.
Some of the more serious causes of bed wetting for girls in this age group is irregular sleep cycles, under developed bladder muscles and some serious illnesses. All three of these possible underlying causes should considered by a doctor before starting a treatment program for bed wetting.
Many children who see their family doctor about bed wetting at age 5 will be diagnosed with nocturnal enuresis. He or she will also be able to suggest strategies to reduce frustration and lessen the amount of work involved in handling bed wetting accidents.
Parents often blame their own parenting skills when a child experiences these sorts of problems, but they are rarely at fault.
The causes of bed wetting can be many and varied from physical to psychological causes.
A child that is nervous or stressed is more likely to have a bed wetting problem. It is important that the parents do not pass on their own irritation, frustration or anger towards the children as this can make the problem worse. Children at this age are all to aware of the embarrassment and shame caused by their bed wetting.
One of the many tools available to the parent of a bed wetting child is the purchase of a bed wetting alarm. These alarms work by waking up the child and the parents during the night helping the child to develop a pattern of waking up to use the bathroom. If the child has already wet the bed at this point then the incident can be dealt with allowing the child to sleep the rest of the night in a clean bed having dealt with the problem.
Another way to keep the amount of cleanup work required in the middle of the night to a minimum is the use of diapers and plastic sheets. These should drastically cut down any cleanup required during the night due to bed wetting.
