Hidden Cameras - Curse or Blessing?
Ask your self this, "Do I have a legitimate excuse to use a hidden camera?" If the answer is yes then by all means buy a hidden camera or spy camera. A legitimate reason is that you suspect your child's babysitter is behaving inappropriately. Have you been coming out in the morning and finding your car all messed up? Is somebody stealing from you at the office. These are all legitimate reasons for using a hidden camera.
Sometimes people buy hidden cameras or spy cameras for reasons that are not on the up and up. Too often we read in the newspaper about some landlord or neighbor using a hidden camera to spy on a female neighbor. Or placing it in a common area of an apartment building such as the laundry room. Disgusting! When these jerks are caught they usually do a good amount of jail time, as they should.
It is a good practice if you have just moved into a new apartment to "sweep" the room with a bug detector. These units pick up and can pinpoint the location of any hidden video camera or RF signal. If you do this you do not have to worry about unscrupulous landlords. A bug detector works great. All you have to do is walk around your new place and see if the unit activates with either a sound or light. Another benefit is you get to feel like James Bond!
"Boy, that was so nice of the landlord to leave that nice wall clock in my bedroom. He is such a nice guy." Well, think again. When you do a sweep of your apartment don't be surprised if your bug detector activates when you get close to that wall clock! These days anything you see could be housing a hidden camera. Make sure you do a complete sweep of your apartment. Remember, if you find something, try not to react. Simply leave your apartment and call the police from outside. You don't want your landlord to know that you have just called the cops.
If you do want a hidden camera for a good reason, there are many types to choose from. Most hidden cameras are built into everyday items you find around a home such as clocks, radios, thermostats, smoke detectors, lamps, etc. You name it and it could contain a hidden camera.
Don't be surprised if somebody notices and comments on that cute little teddy bear sitting on your shelf if you are a single guy living alone. The point is, when you decide that you are going to get a hidden camera make sure it looks like something you would have in your place anyway.
In addition to taking the decor into consideration you have to decide what type of hidden camera you want. There are basically 3 types:1/ Wireless, 2/ Wired, and 3/ Self contained.
The wireless hidden camera is installed in an item along with a small transmitter. When a picture or video is being shot the transmitter sends the signal to a receiver. That receiver is then hooked up to a recording unit, a monitor or your TV.
Choosing a wired hidden camera is probably the most economical but you have to contend with exposed cords. There will be A/V cords coming out of the device and then they are connected to either your TV or monitor to view the picture or a recorder to record the action.
The self contained hidden camera will have the camera and a recording device, usually an SD memory card, hidden inside of it. In order to view what has been recorded you simply take the memory card out of the unit and place it into your computer for viewing. This type is usually the easiest to set up.
Make sure you buy a hidden camera that matches your needs. Do you need to record at night time when very little light is available? You better get a low LUX camera. Do you need it to be motion activated? How about a time and date stamp? These are all available and you can find one that fits what you want it to do.
The bottom line is that no matter what style or type of hidden camera you purchase, make sure you are purchasing it for a legitimate, ethical reason and use it properly.
