Stand and Deliver: Olmos gives a powerful performance in this momentous drama as a hard, requesting professor who empowers his East L.A. barrio students to pass an Advanced Placement Calculus Quiz. That's only the beginning of this tale that is based on a true story. Cast includes Edward James Olmos, Lou Diamond Phillips, Andy Garcia, Can Gotay, and Ingrid Oliu. (105 minutes, 1987)
Lars and the Real Girl: Nice film in regards to socially shocked Gosling, who buys a life sized doll and treats her as if she's alive, to the appall of his older sibling, and brother in law, and the neighbors in their tight knit society. Luckily, an understanding physician (Clarkson) guides them in the right direction. Cast includes Ryan Gosling, Emily Mortimer, Patricia Clarkson, Kelli Gamer, and Paul Schneider. (106 minutes, 2007)
Soapdish: A farcical comedy in reference to a soap opera queen who's losing it, both on the show and in her life. Field and Kline are a treat to watch playing larger than life characters, however Whoopi is trashed, Downey is miscast, and the script (by Robert Harling and Andrew Bergman) thinks that anxious is funny. Cast includes Sally Field, Kevin Kline, Robert Downey, Jr., Cathy Moriarty, Whoopi Goldberg, Elisabeth Shue, Carrie Fisher, Garry Marshall, Teri Hatcher, Paul Johansson, Costas Mandylor, Stephen Nichols, Kathy Najimy, and Ben Stein. China Gate: Global cadets under French instruct assault a Socialist munitions area in Indochina. Fascinating subplots flesh out Fuller's dynamic action tale, with an early view of Vietnam's internal strife. Cast includes Gene Barry, Angie Dickinson, Nat Emperor Cole, Paul Dubov, Lee Van Cleef, George Givot, and Marcel Dalio. (97 minutes, 1957)
The Guyver: All-American Armstrong, contaminated by an extraterrestrial device, finds that he is an armored superhero, an excellent thing, except that virtually everyone else in the film might turn into a frightening beast, like CIA representative Hamill, who turns into a large cockroach. Awkward clumps of humor only make the contrived plot appear even more mindless. (92 minutes, 1992)
Nunzio: A retarded Brooklyn market delivery boy (Proval) envisions he's Superman, and then falls in love with bakery associate Feldshuh. A soft tale improved by Proval's fine acting. Cast includes David Proval, James Andronica, Tovah Feldshuh, Morgana Baron, Vincent Russo, Theresa Saldana, and Monica Lewis. (87 minutes, 1978)
The Little Shop of Horrors: This is a classic black comedy in reference to youthful schnook who creates bloodthirsty plant and is made to kill in request to fuel it with human blood. Originally notorious as the film was shot In 2 days, however now thought to be one of Corman's best films. Nicholson has comical part as masochist who flourishes on dental suffering; Cast includes Jonathan Cloud, Jackie Joseph, Mel Welles, Dick Miller, Myrtle Vail, and Jack Nicholson. (70 minutes, 1960)
Seize the Day: Williams is momentous as Tommy Withelm, turning 40 and a failure by any standard, broke, and much in need of finding love. Wiseman and Stiller offer fine aid as his cold hearted dad and a con man he naively believes in. Lots of recognizable faces in tiny roles: Tony Roberts, Richard Shull, John Fiedler, Jo Van Fleet, William Hickey, Eileen Heckart, and numerous others. Cast includes Robin Williams, Joseph Wiseman, Jerry Stiller, and Glenne Headly. (93 minutes, 1986)
Slaughter in San Francisco: Prior cop Wong desires retribution on killer of his companion. Norris, in an aiding role, is the poor guy. Cast includes Don Wong, Ditch Norris, Sylvia Channing, Robert Jones, and Dan Ivan. (87 minutes, 1981)
