Mobile Storage Containers in the Boston Area

Aug 18, 2007
About six months ago my wife and I decided that it was time for us to look for a larger place. As is with most people, the first thing we needed to do was to sell our current home. Two or three years ago in this area, your only worry would finding a Boston moving company because people were lining up to buy your place as soon as the sign went in the ground. Since then though, things have changed drastically. In fact, we were already planning on taking a hit on this house, if we could sell it at all.

When we first spoke to our realtor, the first thing she told us was to clean out the clutter so the house would show better. She recommended that we look into renting a type of mobile storage container that a few Boston moving companies offer. Now, I had started seeing these containers around recently but was not total clear on how they worked. I met with a local sales representative from a reputable Boston moving company and learned exactly how these things work.

This particular service is made to be extremely flexible and customer friendly. You rent the container itself on a monthly basis and then pay transportation costs every time the container is moved. For me, they dropped the unit off in my driveway where it stayed for a week and a half while I loaded it. Once it was loaded, I called the Boston moving company back and had them relocate the unit to their storage. This way, when people came to view our home, there was no clutter and no container, just open space!

Using this container, I can see how it would be great for other things as well. Home renovations or construction projects are a great use for these containers. They are allowed to stay on-site if you prefer, so you could use it for storing supplies or tools during these projects. The Boston moving company told me that they even drop them on different surfaces besides pavement if needed, which would allow you to have one dropped at a dirt construction site.

Believe it or not, these containers are more than just boxes. There are a few different versions out there which have different characteristics that you should be aware of to protect your goods. The kind is used was made specifically for residential storage and moving. The Boston moving company had a 12', 16', and 20' version of these steel containers. The roof was made of a translucent fiberglass material so you could see what you are doing while loading. It also was ventilated, had railings to tie your load off with and had an easy to open rolling door.

I have seen two other versions as well. One was just a wooden plywood box that measured 5' by 5' and was 8' tall. This particular container is what they call a "vault" in the moving industry and is really made for indoor storage. Some of the companies out there fit these "vaults" with protective sleeves and will leave them out at your residence while you load, but only for a few days. I have also seen a heavy duty steel container around. Typically this version is a 20' or 40' container and is mainly used for commercial storage.

Two months ago my house finally sold. The buyer said that it was in large part to the roomy closets and spacious rooms, much of which was accomplished by this mobile storage container we rented. When this happened, something occurred to me: I didn't want to touch everything in this container again; couldn't I just have them deliver it to my new residence? I called the Boston moving company that was storing my container and found out that they could, which was going to save me both time and money. Since the first container had worked so well, I just had the company drop off another larger unit to pack up the rest of my house.

I have moved 4 other times in my life and I know it is no fun. Moving with one of these mobile storage containers however really reduced the stress because it spread the move over a few of weeks and allowed us to pack our stuff at our pace instead of cramming it all into one day. I would highly recommend others to explore this option of moving if they are staying locally. My sales representative did advise me that if someone is moving across country that they needed to shop the container price against a normal move with a big van line because sometimes the container was actually less of a deal than expected. On a local basis though, this is the way to go. That is as long as you want to make your home show better by clearing clutter, save some money and reduce or stress. So call a Boston moving company today.
