Why Outdoor Spas

Aug 18, 2007
The word Spa has been derived from the acronym of the phrase in Latin, Sanus Per Aquam, which means Health Through Water. By tradition, spas have been places known for their therapeutic mineral springs, or where water with healing properties has been available. In the old world, there were many famous spa towns renowned for their warm, healing, mineral waters.

These days, there is a renewed interest in spas, with outdoor spas mushrooming in scenic spots. In fact, according to surveys, it is estimated that this year about 2000 day spas will be in operation in the U.S., compared to the 20 that existed in 1980, plus, 220 resorts located all over the country that are fully equipped with all the facilities required. These outdoor resort spas are especially popular with women, because they are places where they can unwind completely, taking off their daily masks- no make-up, no working suits, no job titles, no cares of the home and children.

Modern spas are mainly of three kinds- the resort spa, the day spa, and the destination spa. Day spas usually offer treatments like facials and massages on a daily basis. One of the main facilities provided by many resorts, the resort spa, offers superior ambience to resort guests. Destination spas, meanwhile, provide a total spa experience, with provisions for staying overnight.

Most spas these days are located in resort hotels and upscale, luxurious resorts near sources of water. These spas offer special rejuvenation treatments for the body like hot baths, pedicures, manicures, deep body massages, and aromatherapy. Some even provide facilities for a hydro-massage with warm water. And these spas usually also provide guidance and facilities for weight management and nutrition, along with the services of personal trainers, if required. Many spas offer courses in meditation and yoga.

People who want to lose weight or jump-start a healthy lifestyle often choose to spend time in these spas. However, those who are focused on quick weight loss soon discover that the philosophy of health and fitness is quite different in these spas from that of regular gyms. Most of these spas focus on the fact that weight loss be achieved by the commitment to the special programs that they provide. These programs take a more holistic approach to weight loss. Guests are not treated like boot camp recruits, with stringent exercise regimens and sparse diets. Instead, they are encouraged and educated towards adopting a healthier lifestyle.

Yes, of course, the intake of calories is indeed controlled, and the percentages of fat, proteins and carbohydrates are kept at optimal levels. However, you are instructed and nurtured about the choices that you make, while also encouraging you to participate in the walks, hikes, adventure sports, or fitness classes that are most suitable for you.

Guests are also provided a lot of pampering- easing tired muscles and soothing the mind. The aim is not to merely lose weight as a short-term measure, but make lifestyle transformations that permanently change your previous unhealthy habits which led to all those unwanted, extra pounds. According to weight loss experts, this is the best way to lose weight and keep it off.
