Your Ireland Tour: Money Tips
Have you already booked your guided tour of Ireland? If so, you've made a great decision! An Ireland guided tour is a great way to see the country in its authentic state and enjoy the simple lifestyle of Ireland. However, it is important to keep in mind that expenses will be higher than you anticipate. I'm sure you are all set for lodging, transportation, and food - but there are still a few minor incidentals. These are some tips to keep in mind so that when it comes to money in Ireland!
Currency: In 2005 (January 1st) Ireland adopted the euro. Most merchants you come across will not accept any other form of currency, including the pound or the dollar. So remember, before you head over to Ireland, convert the cash you are going to be spending.
Exchanging currency: The value of the dollar compared to the value of the euro is constantly changing. Use this to your advantage! Watch the exchange rate for the few weeks prior to your vacation, and when you see the value of the euro close to the value of the dollar, make the exchange. Also, do not exchange your dollars for euros at airport kiosks or tourist "hot spots". They often have hidden fees or surcharges for exchanging.
Bring cash with you: It is always a good idea to have around 200 euros on you each week for incidental expenses. Some of these may be souvenirs, pub meals, tips, or toiletries. If your Ireland tour is scheduled for longer than two weeks, then it is a good idea to only bring two weeks of cash and get more as you need it. Make sure to check with your bank in order to have a good understanding of how to withdraw cash from Ireland.
Credit Cards: Although you might not expect to use your debit or credit card while in Ireland, it is wise to have at least one of them with you, just in case. Before leaving the States, make sure you bank (or banks) know that you are going to be in Ireland, and make sure they know the duration of your stay. With high alerts on identity theft, many overseas transactions look suspicious and often result in the cancellation of that card.
Following a few common-sense tips like these can prevent headaches and greatly enhance your enjoyment of your Ireland tour. Bon voyage!
