How Hearing Aids Are Becoming More Technologically Advanced

By Chris Channing

Just a decade ago, hearing aids were very different than they are now. They were bulky, hard to conceal, and weren't able to effectively work with technologies as they do now. Today you can get hearing aids that can accomplish all sorts of things- from amplifying sound to "speaking" to other technology devices.

Bluetooth is a technology that youth know as commonly being implemented in cell phones. Bluetooth technology allows one device to communicate with another without wires of any kind. For hearing aids, that means you can have your hearing aid pickup sound directly from another device. This limits background noise, keeps the sound loud, and even allows for answering phones conveniently.

Directional microphones are being installed into hearing aids to improve the ability of one to hear sounds that are directly in front of them. Before, it was hard to hear sounds unless one ear was facing the source of the sound. The technology works well for sounds behind you as well, and even helps blot out background noise.

The volume of the sounds you pick up can fluctuate. It's often necessary to adjust the volume of your hearing aid to make it more comfortable to hear a loud or subtle voice. In doing so, you are calling attention to yourself and also potentially frustrated at the process. New hearing aids are able to use remotes instead, which can be easily controlled and carried around in your pocket.

If your home phone doesn't have Bluetooth technology, and few will probably have it, you can get a telephone adapter to recreate the same effect. A telephone adapter is able to block out background noise as well, so that you can hear sounds much easier while on the phone. The adapter is easy to install, and can be found at most places where a hearing aid is sold. So long as your phone and hearing aid both support it, it will be a valuable addition to your home life.

Although it would seem like it isn't sanitary, you are able to take a hearing aid out for a trial run. The trial run will show you what it is like living with a hearing aid of your choice- and is recommended if you are able to do it. When you try out a hearing aid first you will be eliminating the possibility you won't be satisfied with a purchase. And since hearing aids are costly, it's important that you are completely happy.

In Conclusion

In the future, there are going to be a lot more exciting features that hearing aids can offer. For now it's already exciting to see what you can accomplish with a modern hearing aid. To get started, look at some Internet retailers who offer the ear pieces, and see if you can get one custom fitted for your needs.
