All About Sheds

By Jon Weinkle
Nov 1, 2009
There are things everyone knows about sheds such as how they look but before you ever start your search to purchase one of these wonderful storage units, there are things you have to know and do. If you don't address these things before hand you may end up with a shed and no place to put it!

Though it makes since to make sure you have the proper space and clearances for the size of shed you want it is a step that is often missed; especially in the height department. You will also need to call your local codes department or your homeowners association to find out if you need a permit to place a shed in your yard.

After you get the legal and practical items out of the way, it is time to start the process of shopping but not buying. I say this because some people get carried away with what they see and get really disappointed by the price or the work that will have to go into such a project. This is the research part. Find the things you like and make a note to come back to it once you have looked at all your options.

Wooden sheds are one of the most popular for a couple of reasons; they look good and you can get them pre-built and delivered on a local basis. While all that is true, wooden sheds also need the most as far as maintenance goes. You will need to treat it for boring insects and water rot and make sure it gets a fresh coat of paint from time to time. As long as you know what it takes to keep this type of shed looking great and are willing to put the work into it you should be good to go.

If maintenance is an issue, you will want to take a look at the plastic sheds on the market today. They are very popular because they come to your home as a kit that is pretty easy to put together. You will need to make arrangements for a foundation on level ground and once that is done the installation normally takes no longer than a day.

The most you should have to do from time to time is spray the shed off with a water hose. Since there is no need to treat for insects and water just runs off it, you have little to worry about as far as upkeep. They also list the snow load rating and the wind rating so you can make sure it will work in your area. Call your local codes department to find out what they recommend.

The last but not least option is the shed made of metal. These come in materials described as tin to steel so make sure you know the gauge you are buying if you go this route. These sheds are normally a little bit cheaper and can be placed on level ground without a foundation so they are a bit more versatile in certain situations.

The bottom line is to go through the process described above and make sure you don't skip one of the important steps; and they are all important steps. If you do this there should be no reason you can't make a well informed decision and solve any organizational or storage issue you currently have with a shed.
