New Parents Guide: Take Care Of Newborn Babies
Once you become a new parent, caring for your baby should be the most important thing going through your head. There are several things you should know to make sure your baby is happy and healthy.
1. How are you going to feed your baby? Making the choice of breastfeeding or bottle feeding is a big decision. Your physician can tell you if you are capable of breastfeeding. Breastfeeding has been proven to lead to fewer cases of hypersensitivity later in life versus those who were raised on a bottle. The mother's milk contains natural enzymes and antibodies that help strengthen a baby's immune system. It is not true that breast milk makes a baby more intelligent later in life.
2. Sleep. The amount of sleep your baby gets is key to your babies health. Newborns need up to 18 hours of sleep per day. A newborn will have a crazy sleep schedule so, as new parents, you will struggle with your own sleep habits being interrupted. Thankfully this phase only lasts for about the first 6 weeks. After 6 weeks, your baby will develop a more structured sleep pattern. A newborn shows that he or she is tired by crying or rubbing the eyes. Newborns should be allowed to sleep at the first sign they feel sleepy. If your newborn is keeping you up at night, do not get angry. This is normal and part of being a parent. Try and sleep when your baby sleeps during the day.
3. The proper way of bathing your newborn. Newborn babies need not be bathed on a daily basis. Bathing them two to three times a week is enough. Bathe your baby using sponge baths. This is imperative at first. Tub bathing your baby can only be done once the baby's umbilical cord falls off to avoid infection.
4. Your baby's skin. Newborn babies have very delicate skin. You need to talk with your pediatrician about what products are safe to use. It is very common for babies to develop rashes because of their very sensitive skin. If your baby is irritated by a rash or the rash is accompanied by a fever, you should seek immediate medical attention.
5. When to give the baby medicine. Like anyone else, newborn babies sometimes have special needs that require attention. When giving your baby medicine, it is important that you follow the advice of your baby's physician. You need to know how to give the right dose prescribed by the doctor. It can sometimes be advised to start the baby with a small dose to ensure there is no adverse reaction to the medication.
