Ways to Protect Yourself While on Holiday

By Daniel Collins

Summer is here, which means Brits everywhere are preparing to go on holiday. However, while it's tempting to focus solely on the positive aspects of your holiday - such as all the activities you'll partake in once you arrive at your destination - it's also important to think about protecting yourself, in case mishaps should occur.

Of course, this will require you to think about some of the things that can go wrong while you're on holiday. If you find yourself protected in the face of such events, you'll be glad you took protective measures beforehand.

One way to protect yourself while on holiday is to ensure your health is covered. If you're travelling within Europe, your EHIC plan will cover you to some extent. You'll want ensure your card is not expired, and understand exactly what it does - and does not - cover so you're not faced with any surprises. If you're travelling outside Europe, you'll need alternate travel insurance. It's always a good idea to secure travel insurance anyway, as your EHIC - if you're travelling within Europe - would only cover health-related costs. Travel insurance, on the other hand, can also cover lost luggage, delayed or cancelled flights, theft of personal items, and more. So don't embark on your holiday without first ensuring you're fully protected with a comprehensive travel insurance policy.

Another simple yet important way to protect yourself on holiday is to pack a sufficient amount of sun care products. The sun is stronger during the summer months, increasing your chances of getting burnt or experiencing serious damage to your skin - which can lead to skin cancer. Make sure you're protected with an SPF 30 or higher sunscreen, and try to wear a hat when you're at the beach or outdoors to keep the sun out of your face.

Remember: it's possible to get a suntan even while wearing sunscreen to block harmful UVA and UVB rays - so protecting yourself doesn't mean you'll have to return home without that golden look. Finally, it's also important to protect your eyes from the sun - so ensure you pack your sunglasses too!

Last but not least, don't forget to take precautions to protect your money. It's a good idea to get replaceable traveller's cheques, just in case theft occurs. You should also jot down the contact numbers for all your credit card companies and banks, just in case you have a problem with your cards, or in the event they're stolen. Having contact numbers on hand means you can resolve your card issues faster or quickly cancel your cards if theft does occur.

Sometimes it can be tempting to skip making precautions but this is always a risky tactic and if anything were to happen to you while you were away you would instantly regret it. Some companies now offer multi trip travel insurance which means frequent travellers can be covered for a whole year.

Being prepared for travel is always recommended and many of the steps to ensure a safe holiday can be very simple.
