The Challenge of the World Series of Poker
It's hard not to accept a good challenge. In fact, as humans, we are constantly challenging ourselves and being challenged by others. For a poker player, the biggest challenge around is to play in the World Series of Poker.
There are a couple of reasons why the WSOP is the ultimate high for a poker player. One is, of course, the large amount of money to be won. Some players enter the WSOP just to be able to say that they did it, though. It's a great thing for any poker player's ego.
So, if your goal is to make a name for yourself in poker, the WSOP is where you want to be. Of course, since WSOP events get lots of television coverage, you'll be able to build your poker rep that way. Just as important, though, is the ability to hone your skills against poker pros and, perhaps, even demonstrate that you can take down pots against the very pros that you idolize.
Of course, not everyone can afford the hefty buy in fees that come with WSOP events. Luckily, though, if you're on a tight budget, you have other options for reaching your ultimate goal of WSOP fame. Namely, satellite tournaments.
A satellite tournament is a low buy in tournament that awards entry to a bigger event to the winner or to a set amount of top finishers. There are lots of WSOP satellite tournaments available. So, although it will take some time, skill and, yes, a little luck, you could win your way in, instead of paying the WSOP fees. That means that, for as little as $30 or $40, you might ultimately be able to win the huge WSOP event first place prize.
Of course, it's important to remember that, each year, more and more people play WSOP events. So, even if you get in, there's certainly no guarantee that you'll win. That's yet another reason that most people like to get in through satellites. It costs less money, so there's less to lose.
You need a little more than just a chip and a chair to get into a WSOP event, too. Aside from paying or winning your way in, you also have to meet the age requirement. All players must be 21 or older to play in the World Series of Poker.
Of course, assuming you can buy or win your way in and you meet the age requirement, you have a decent chance of at least finishing well, if not winning the whole thing. It all depends on your skills and who you find yourself up against, not to mention the luck of the cards.
Poker is the equalizer of games and sports, though. In other words, where else can amateurs compete against their favorite pros and have a decent chance? That's certainly unlikely in Basketball or Golf. It's always a possibility at the WSOP, though. In fact, many no-name players have beaten the pros to take WSOP titles and become known as pros themselves. The most popular example is Chris Moneymaker, who won his entry in an online satellite tournament and went on to win the WSOP Main Event.
So, if you have dreams of making the WSOP, just keep some simple things in mind. Practice, hone your skills and don't be intimidated by your poker idols. If you can do that, you might just become someone else's pro poker player idol.
