Do You Still Love Your Toy Fire Truck!

By Michelle Rudge
Nov 2, 2009
I've been surprised to find that information about the beloved toy fire truck is very difficult to find! The internet doesn't have very much content (unless I'm using the wrong words to search) and even my local library had very few books. So this little article compiles the information that I have been able to find in an easy to read format... whether it's a special gift for a child or an antique to add to your collection.

I was surprised to learn that there are plenty of options available for toy fire trucks. For the young baby there are the soft play things for them to squeeze and chew. But as your child grows there are more sophisticated toys that include working parts, flashing lights and wailing sirens. Every toy store has at least a few different types but if you're looking for variety you can't go past online stores like Amazon.

But there are those among us who are in the toy fire truck market, not for playthings, but as collectors. Collectors are often those who are passionate about the fire fighting industry and have an eye for what makes a great collector piece. Many of these collectors join up to internet forums, there are quite a few of them online, particularly those to do with model manufacturers.

It is the toy fire trucks longevity that has made it such a collectable antique. There are 3 main manufacturer's that you should look out for... Dent Hardware & Co started producing their first cast-iron fire trucks in 1898 & in the 1900's moved to production of the toys in die-cast. Hubley Company started in the late 19th Century and before 1920 were producing cast iron toys. By 1940 they were the largest manufacturer of cast iron toys, but moved to die-cast to compete with rising competition from overseas. Also in the late 19th Century Kenton Lock Manufacturing Co was producing cast iron toys under the trade name of Kentontoys.

So that completes just a small bit of information about the toy fire truck and their continued popularity even to this day. If it's a plaything for a small child, or a an antique for a big (meaning: adult!) child, my hope is that you may have learned a little bit more about the toy fire truck.
