Erase Internet History For Privacy Purposes

By Trevor Johnson

For those who are interested in erasing their history of websites visited on the Internet for whatever reason, there is a fairly straightforward way to go about how to erase Internet history from Internet Explorer, or at least the basics of sites visited, cookies left behind and other items that are a normal part of operating within the Internet explorer environment.

What you want to try to do is to completely eliminate as much as possible and he tracking cookies or histories of searches you've conducted or visits to any other websites. You will also want to erase all histories related to "save"and "run" as well as any histories of documents that you've recently called up and opened. IE always takes care to create histories in this manner.

The first thing to do is to bring up the Options tab on the Tools menu. Look for the "delete all..." box and click on it. You can also go down each area to be erased line by line if you want to spend a bit more time in erasing. This line by line erasure will eliminate cookies, temporary files and "saved form and password data" information. As far as the basics goes, that's about it.

One thing, though, to understand is that there are many more places on your computer's hard drive that will still have information about your Internet surfing habits on it. In order to accomplish a more complete erasure, it will normally be necessary that you purchase a commercial erasure program. There are some out on the Internet that are fairly cheap and will also erase registry histories.

Go to MS Explorer, right-click "C:drive" and then "Search." You're going to be looking for the "For Files and Folders" selection button. Once you have that and you've clicked it, enter "index.dat" where it says "Filename." From there, upload your erasure program, which is going to help you over right the index.dat file history that will be created when you entered in "index.dat."

As far as the basics of how to erase Internet history, there isn't much more to know then just how to go from the "Tools" in Internet Explorer and then to the "Options" tab and then selecting what you want erased. Those who are more adventuresome and want to be far more thorough can go into MS Explorer and create an "index.dat" file though they will need some sort of hex file editor to do so.
