The Front Page: The third filming of the Hecht-MacArthur play about a crazy and woolly Chicago newspaperman in the 1920s has barely anything new to offer (with the exception of 4-letter words) although it continues to be an entertaining piece of work. Cast includes Jack Lemmon, Walter Matthau, Carol Burnett, Susan Sarandon, Vincent Gardenia, David Wayne, Allen Garfield, Austin Pendleton, and Charles Dunning. (105 minutes, 1974)
Deep Red: There's style to burn in pointless terror thriller with Hemmings on the trail of a sadistic psycho murderer. Showy, weird scenes set to beating rock soundtrack. Cast includes David Hemmings, Daria Nicolodi, Gabriele Lavia, Macha Meril, and Glauco Mauri. (98 minutes, 1975)
Patton: This milestone in biographies finds Scott vivid as offbeat, radiant General George Patton, whose temper often erupts on demand during WW2. Malden is comparably impressive as General Omar Bradley in this intelligently written, finely wrought biographical war drama. Cast includes George C. Scott, Karl Malden, Stephen Youthful, Michael Hefty, Frank Latimore, James Edwards, Lawrence Dobkin, Michael Bates, and Tim Considine. (169 minutes, 1970)
Lightning the White Stallion: An incredibly weak family fare with Rooney a prosperous guy whose racehorse is stolen. Cast includes Mickey Rooney, Isabel Lorea, Susan George, and Billy Wesley. (95 minutes, 1986)
Primal Fear: Hotshot Chicago lawyer defends an altar boy implicated of brutally killing a much loved archbishop even though all proof appears to point to the youthful gentleman's guilt. Gere gives a powerful performance in one of his best roles, as an arrogant attorney who, for once, doesn?t have all the facts straight. Newcomer Norton is additionally very impressive. The film loses some of its impact by going on too long and by following unconnected tale facets. Richard Gere, Laura Linney, John Mahoney, Alfie Woodard, Frances McDormand, Edward Norton, Terry O'Quinn, Andre Braugher, Steven Bauer, Joe Spanq, Tony Plana, Stanley Anderson, Maura Tierney, and Jon Seda. Mrs. Brown, You've got a Lovely Daughter: A stupid reprieve for a film, with Herman and his Hermits heading for London to enter their greyhound in a race. In between the anticipation they harmonize some of their big hit songs. Cast includes Herman's Hermits, Stanley Holloway, Mona Washbourne, Sara Caldwell, and Javelin Percival. (100 minutes, 1984)
Fracture: Hopkins plays a cold, determining gentleman who shoots his spouse once he finds she's been in bed with an L.A.P.D. lieutenant. However there is no definitive proof, which makes the case a perfect one for partner D.A. Gosling, who's just getting ready to move on to a cushy job at a high-end law firm. Cast includes Anthony Hopkins, Ryan Gosling, David Stratham, Rosamund Pike, Billy Burke, Fiona Shaw, Bob Gunton, Embeth Davidtz, Cliff Curtis, Xander Berkeley, Josh Starnberg, and Joe Spano. Heartland: A basic, well informed tale of hearty Americans surviving the frontier life, circa 1910. Ferrell plays a youthful widow who acknowledges a job as housekeeper for dour rancher Tom in the wilds of Wyoming. Well performed, well filmed, and beautifully understated, based on the real journals of a pioneer lady. Cast includes Rip Torn, Conchata Ferrell, Barry Primus, Lilia Skala, Megan Folson, and Amy Wright. (100 minutes, 1979)
The Sins of Lola Montes: An intense melodrama set in Belgian Congo with Dickinson a missionary nurse engaged in romance and local clashes. Cast includes Angie Dickinson, Peter Finch, Roger Moore, Woody Strode, Rafer Johnson, Juano Hernandez, Mary Wickes, and Scatman Crothers. (124 minutes, 1961)
