Simple Tips For Improving Memory

By Michelle Rudge
Nov 3, 2009
It can be such a frustrating thing when you just can't remember the simplest of things. Do you forget your mum's birthday, or your wedding anniversary. Do you struggle to remember a book just a short time after reading it? Well this article is for you! You can begin improving memory simply by exercise. Just like the rest of your body requires exercise, the same is true for your brain, it's a muscle and requires exercise in order to be strong and agile.

Apparently, all of us were born with a photographic ability, it is how we absorbed information, learnt so quickly and developed. We used to use a large part of our brain capacity but as we got older we actually trained our brains to think less and therefore use less of its capacity. All is not lost though, we can re-strengthen the many nueral pathways in our brain, simply by exercise. Using methods that are available to you right now, you can open up the unused portions of your brain, re-firing the neural pathways and improving your ability to absorb information, store it and then recall it with accuracy when you need it.

These six tips are just a few simple techniques that you can employ straight away, to help you remember all the important stuff. 1. Pay attention. You can't remember something if you never learned it, and you can't learn something if you don't pay enough attention to it. If you are easily distracted or need to concentrate, find yourself a quiet spot to digest the information. 2. Gather information in a style that is best suited to you. Some people learn best by seeing, some by hearing and others by doing. Know what style you prefer and use it. 3. Involve as many senses as possible. Even if you're a visual learner, read out loud what you want to remember.

4. Relate any new data or information to something that is already familiar to you. Like visually connecting the name of a woman you have just met with your favorite flower. 5. Get organized. Nothing helps with your memory as much as being organized with a diary, address book or notebooks. This frees up you mind to concentrate on the important things and makes you more relaxed. 6. Keeping a positive mental attitude is of utmost importance. This allows your brain to expect success.

Improving memory will improve all areas of your life. It's not just about being able to memorize a list of groceries or remember birthday's and anniversaries. As you exercise your brain you will find that you can absorb information quicker and you are able to retain and then recall that information. You can open yourself up to learning new skills, gain an appreciation for music, art or literature and so much more. Whatever your reason for improving memory, brain exercise is the very first step you need to take.
