Can You Light Your Cigar with a Zippo?

By Dave Sabot

If you are new to the world of cigars, it can be a confusing place, particularly the lighting process. You'll find a lot of information out there that's a bit conflicting. However, one of the first things that you should learn is what you can and cannot use to light your cigar. For instance, if you are contemplating lighting your cigar with a Zippo lighter, you should put the lighter down and back away. Why should you not use a Zippo to light up your smoke? What happens that's so important to avoid?

First, the reason that you should stay away from Zippos is that they use lighter fluid. In fact, you should avoid any type of lighter that burns standard lighter fluid. This is due to the fact that lighter fluid contains numerous impurities. When the fluid is burned, the impurities are released into the air. You've smelled them before - now imagine those smells becoming embedded in a great tasting cigar and you can certainly see why you should avoid using these devices.

Rather than Zippos or other lighter fluid filled devices, it's better to make use of modern technology. Butane torch lighters can give you numerous benefits. For instance, these lighters use butane, rather than lighter fluid, which helps to ensure you only taste that cigar. Butane has almost zero impurities, which means that it does not have a taste or smell. You'll be happy to know that using these lighters ensures you only taste tobacco.

Of course, purists will demand that you use matches and cedar shavings to light your cigar. This is done because the scents and tastes from the cedar can actually enhance the taste of your cigar. That said, not everyone has the time to deal with cedar shavings and the problems that come with matches. In addition, torch lighters won't blow out in a breeze, ensuring that you're able to light up wherever you might be.

Hopefully, you can see that the use of Zippos is not a good idea and will result in a subpar smoking experience. Save your cigar's flavor and aroma by using a quality butane lighter. You will find that purchasing a dual or triple jet lighter will even help ensure that you're able to light that cigar on the first try every time.
