The Largest Social Network on the Internet: Facebook

By Gerry Knight Jr.
Nov 3, 2009
In its early days providing information on the Internet was left to website designers and coders who knew how to create websites. There were only few possibilities for users without that knowledge to create websites. Another aspect of that time was the missing interaction on websites which mainly consisted of forums and chat rooms. Information usually was provided by one person without possibilities to interact with that information.

With the rise of faster Internet connections and computer systems a new breed of websites emerged. These social networking websites made it easier to directly interact with users by exchanging information, pictures, videos and other kind of files. They also got rid of the need to know a web coding language to create a basic website. Facebook was one of the few networks that tool really off in the last years catering to a broad worldwide audience.

Every user can make an account at Facebook which can then be found by other Facebook users. It is possible to receive friend requests and send them out as well. You are then actively taking part in the virtual life of your friends by receiving status updates, pictures, links and other information that they post or receive. This makes it easy to keep up with the life of friends that you do not visit or meet every day.

On Facebook you can change how people can search from you - even changing the settings so that no one could find you, which is the most secure way to prevent those who you do not wish to see your Facebook from seeing it. Of course, this still allows you to search for others yourself. There are various other security settings that make Facebook one of the most safe social networking sites.

While the main benefit is the ease which you can post pictures and text, one of the more exciting features of Facebook is the ability to play various games on the site, and even battle against your friends for the high score. You can invite friends to play games with you, and even message them that you've beaten their score! It makes it easy for a group of friends to have fun competing against each other in a variety of games ranging from Tetris, to Scrabble and many more.

Facebook also has many quizzes that you can take, about a variety of subjects ranging from 'Which of the Seven Dwarfs are You?' to 'What Political Party most Suits You?'. The quizzes are made by the users, so there's almost an infinite variety to choose from! As with the games, you can send your results to all of your friends if you so choose. You could even invite them to take the quiz, and compare your results with all of your friends.

Facebook originally targeted college students to provide them a way to keep in contact with mates and fellow students who moved to another college or finished they study. Interest from other groups picked up fairly soon and today's Facebook combines a mixture of every group of the general population from teenagers to grandparents and everything in between. It is still used by many college students to keep up to date with their families.

Overall, Facebook allows you to safely keep in contact with friends, relatives, children, and anyone that you would wish to talk to. You can share pictures with your friends, play games against them, or do a vast variety of other fun activities. It's what all social networks should be - easy to use, secure, and best of all, fun!
